Britain lost India after the war due to being broke af but the British empire was always gay af, and losing an empire (or rather, a claim on useless land filled with turds) due to being broke af is different from WWI where empires ended with emperors being executed or abdicating as their homelands turned into turmoil.

The Cold War really ended the 19th century - and itw as WW2 that brought it.

It's a paradigm that we are familiar with because it's in living memory, but how valid of a narrative is it? How close at any time were these countries to a full-on war at any time aside from a few incidents?

If WW2 ended with Russia retreating its army and adopting Swedish socialism, what then? How would the world be different today?

People literally were eating each other in WWII. Not just the Japanese. Soviets too.

And while trench warefare was bad, the world has never seen battles of such brutal scale as in WWII. Fighting tanks feet away from you in Kursk. Then retreats (years worth) on both sides of the Eastern Front. Running for days nonstop until you just get rolled over by a tank.

That doesn't even touch upon the raping and pillaging.
