Ok, so why don't you think requiring a higher percentage of components be made for $16/hr to qualify for duty-free treatment is significant?

Because gains for the US auto industry resulting from this will likely be cancelled out by shipping production of smaller cars, the margins of which can't eat higher costs, outside the USMCA zone. Or result in higher prices to consumers from manufacturers passing the costs on.

Higher prices for new cars in exchange for more $16+/hr jobs in the U.S. is a trade off a lot of people (including a lot of Democrat redistributionists) would make.

Even if the benefits are cancelled out by said higher prices? Doesn't make a ton of sense to be honest. I'd rather have real wage growth (which has fallen under Trump, by the way).

The people buying new cars and the people working $16+/hr jobs are not the same people. That's the point that a lot of people miss when discussing trade and globalism (although I'm surprised an XO regular would miss that point).

If raising the price of caviar results in a better life for proles and a slightly diminished life for elites, that may be a wise decision even if GDP falls.

Now, if you're saying they will sell fewer cars overall, and therefore will not increase the number of U.S. jobs, that could be a valid point, but sounds speculative.

Link to real wage numbers?

You don't think the costs of new cars going up incrementally would be reflected in later secondary market sales and still affect $16/hour types?

Totally get your point, I am just not sure that it is correct that it results in a better life for proles and a slightly diminished life for elites (assuming we are limiting the conversation to material goods and material quality of life and not more esoteric concepts like pride in work, etc.).

https://www.forbes.com/sites/patrickwwatson/2018/09/25/real-wage-growth-is-actually-falling/#667951367284

This is all speculative. Any observation of how companies will adapt to changing supply line pricing dynamics is inherently speculative.

Here are some good reads from a variety of sources. Maybe they move production here - maybe they move it outside the USMCA entirely, maybe they build in Mexico and export elsewhere, etc. It's pretty hard to say, but the consensus seems to be it will be net neutral.

Canadian dairy farmers fume that concessions granted US in new trade deal are too costly

Canadian dairy farmers say the renegotiated deal with the U.S. to replace NAFTA could lead to hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue for producers.

President Donald Trump has previously blasted Canada's protectionist dairy policies as "not fair to our farmers" and harmful to milk producers in Wisconsin and other border states.

The newly minted United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement provides the U.S. with access to about 3.6 percent of Canada's dairy market and gets rid of a controversial domestic milk pricing class.

The leader of a Canadian dairy trade group says the new trade pact was a sign that Canada's dairy farmers "are nothing more than a bargaining chip to satisfy President Trump."
