Couple bucks is sufficient whereas it would clearly not be acceptable to do the same at a steakhouse).
Basically the patrons subsidize your use of the maid service because you've chosen not to tip. If you think it's not a worthwhile service, you should probably just tell the front desk that they should skip your room rather than being an immoral parasite.
