The reason they leave it in by default is because most people think it looks better. Remember it's a FEATURE that tv manufacturers add to sell units.

It depends on what you mean by "better."

No smoothing will look more like the theater version.

Smoothing generally makes it easier to see detail, particularly in fast motion.

You are an idiot if you don't even understand the basis for your own preferences.

If you say, "I prefer the aesthetics of a lower frame rates, its rougher feel, and its ability to blunt the detail in action," that's fine.

But don't go around agreeing with stupid "shitty camcorder" arguments as though you're making an argument about image quality.

motion smoothing is bullshit and you know it. It doesn't put me in the movie more, it takes me out of it and no matter how many times I watch it I can never get over the seemingly unpolished quality, even if it is "more realistic"

it isn't more realistic. it is adding false frames that aren't even in the film to achieve a digital effect. that's all it is, an effect, and an extremely shitty one at that. there is nothing "real" about the picture it presents.

What relevance does that have any way? Film is an art form, it is not supposed to be an emulation of reality.

You're abandoning your realism argument? Motion smoothing is almost always going to make certain scenes look more realistic than film.

Hell, one of the two main arguments against motion smoothing is that it *is* more realistic looking. The other is that it is unfaithful to the creator's vision.

Or maybe they should stop being slaves to a historical accident and start making deliberate, meaningful artistic choices.

24 fps isn't some sort of magical rate. It just happened to be good enough and economical enough a long, long time ago.

I don't dispute that 24 fps has a certain feel, nor do I dispute that someone can like that feel. People can also prefer impressionism to photorealism or canvas to silk.

But the general line of image quality and "shitty camcorder" arguments is mostly nonsense.

Film is recorded at 24fps, video is 30fps. It's a holdover from like the 1920s when film was so expensive that studios tried to use as little of it as possible. Theoretically it could have been 30fps the whole time and we would all expect movies to look like that.

I can read maps really well but prefer them to be zoomed out pretty good to orient myself. I can navigate very effectively in entirely new cities and retrace my steps/know where I'm going very quickly after passing through an area once. I am also autistically attuned to finding typos in docs. And I can build very intricate shit using small delicate tools and parts. But the smoothing stuff doesn't register for me at all. Rate my spatial intelligence.

Among other things, 24 fps is fucking horrendous at doing things like smooth landscape pans.

Do whatever you enjoy. This isn't a fight that should be based on some sort of religiously held principles.

This is similar to the endless arguments audiophiles have regarding whether you must seek a flat, perfect reproduction of the recording or whether it's ok to enjoy added warmth, big bass, etc.

Seem my comment above, it has a painterly effect that gives film a distinct artistic voice. If they shot in 50 fps it would look like some kind of video game cutscene, which is fine for video games but has a completely different effect on the viewer.

What matters is the framerate that the film was shot at and meant to be viewed at. There have been directors like Peter Jackson that have experimented with faster frame rates, and it looks ok in the context of those films only because they were made to accommodate it.

They are better than TVs from 1993, but in general they are not better than TVs from, say, 2011. Modern 4k TVs have lower refresh rates than 1080p TVs from that era and plasmas have been totally phased out. OLED is great though colors can be off, viewing angles are still limited and they have have burn in (though plasmas had that too).

I've checked with cinophile buddies irl and the official xo position is now this:

-motion smotthing is a ttt gimmick

-they built it into tvs because some of the earlier lcds were too ttt to function without it - calling it a feature was just marketing

-anybody who prefers motin smoothing is a ttt

Now he’s saying that some of the points about it being a matter of preference may be right. Evaluate these statements

One other small point... I just got your last text... TV is 60/1.001 frames per second to sync the timing with the national electrical grid, but the film part is right. The high film rate stuff just looks strange because we're not conditioned to it, and the interpolation looks strange because it's all made up. both aee murder for fast sports

It's not the actual data, and you can see it... modern TVs just run the panel at 120hz which is 30x4 or 24x5 so it looks fine for bothh

No joke, just get one of those $10 square antennas off Amazon and check out the NFL broadcasts from the local networks. It's night and day better than cable or satellite.

120hz is for 1080p only. No existing TV can display 4k at true 120hz, and will not be able to until HDMI standards are revised. Even then 4k 120hz will cost a fortune, as it will be the new killer feature that manufacturers use to justify charging $4,500 for a TV.
