At what point do we just admit that the conferences have lost all meaning? If the Big Ten adds Texas/Oklahoma as I have read, it is time to just admit the traditional conference structure is pointless. It is no longer about tradition and playing historic rivals in the state next to you when you have unwieldy conferences that feature Texas/Oklahoma and Maryland/Rutgers.
It will be interesting to see what happens with the next round of TV rights. The big TV contracts are going to go away due to cord cutting and the next bidders will likely be streaming services who will rely on a data-driven approach based on paying for only the schools people actually want to watch. No one cares about Northwestern and Oregon State games.
Does this end in essentially PPV for each game? Four 16 team super-conferences? I think the most likely long-term move is the top 25-35 schools that actually bring in ratings break off and form their own league while keeping traditional conferences for the other sports. Break the teams into regional pods like the NFL (e.g AFC Central) and have an NFL-style playoff. They would likely make $100M plus each in TV rights, while the remaining teams struggle to get by and become non-conference cannon fodder. It makes a lot more sense to get back to the smaller regional conferences IMO.
What do you want or expect to happen?

As we know, all revolves around the mighty TV dollar, but the TV business is drastically changing. Who knows how we’ll be watching sports in 10 years, but it likely won’t be via the current bundled cable model. At the very least, consumers will be able to decide for themselves which media entities (ESPN, FS1, NCBSN, etc.) they’re willing to pay for. Or perhaps no longer will be a middleman and you will purchase game broadcasts straight from the leagues themselves to stream on your own device.
Whereas the last round of realignment was driven by inventory — bundle together as many schools from as many markets as possible to command the highest possible subscriber fees — the next round will be more about content. Put on the biggest possible games to garner the largest possible audience because the viewers themselves will become the buyers rather than Comcast or Time Warner.
To that end, the best possible way for an Ohio State or Alabama to maximize its value will be to shed the six or so games a year that only its own fans care about and turn every game into a national event. I’m talking one 24-team “conference” of only the biggest names in the sport, funneling exclusively into the College Football Playoff.

Longhorn Network $ was more important than playing Nebraska and Texas A&M
You know, the school Texas talks about in their fucking fight song?

Exactly. As would Frost v. (Lincoln) Riley.
Going forward, the only plausible answer here is 4 super conferences with 8 team divisions, an 8 team playoff with 3 at-larges (one non-power 5 dedicated) and 4 non-conference games every year (i.e. just one rotating intra-conference-other-division game). This would maximize incentives for all the big dogs to play each other so that they could get one of the three at-larges with two losses based on strength of schedule better than Notre Dame's.

"until people a at the top 30 or so school realize they can make $150M a year and not have to give schools like Iowa State money."
This is obviously where everything is heading. The Big 10 managed to exist for 120+ years with virtually no infighting concerning the share and share alike arrangement, notwithstanding the UM/OSU + everyone else dynamic for a large part of that time. While the Big 12 members were fighting like little bitches over revenue distribution, no one in the Big 10 even hinted at disturbing the longstanding profit distribution.
Now that the Big 10, as a historical relationship between institutions of higher learning, is all but dead, I don't see any reason for OSU, UM. and to a lesser extent, PSU to voluntarily continue with this arrangement.

you're making no sense here.
Nebraska's options were to (a) stay in the Big12 and continue to get screwed by UT and risk getting completely left out in the cold if UT decided to jump conferences or (b) move to the B1G, protect its long term future and increase its yearly revenue BIGLY.
If you can't understand why Nebraska chose (b) then you are truly too stupid for words.

“Nebraska's problems with Texas literally date back to when the Big 12 [started].”
You mean how TTTexas pwned Nebraska in 96, 98 AND 99 and ruined multiple chances at national championships and then took over the Big 12 after that? LJL at cornfaggots.

There has been persistent talk of Texas joining the Big 10 going all the way back to the 90s. For example: https://www.si.com/college-football/2016/08/16/big-12-expansion-oral-history-big-8-swc-merger And "credible" sources were claiming that Texas and the Big 10 were exploring Texas joining the Big 10 when the Big 12 was on the cusp of imploding. Who knows if these talks were sincere, or if Texas was merely trying to negotiate better terms with the Pac 12. The point is that Nebraska didn't know, and if Texas joined the Big 10, there was practically zero chance Nebraska would also be invited to join the Big 10 (nor is it likely would Nebraska want to continue being in the same conference as Texas, and that sentiment had nothing to do with on field competition, with the possible limited exception being officiating).
Everyone likes to talk shit about those faggots, and personally, I would hate it if Texas joined the Big 10. However, I will also concede that they would be an autoadmit to the Big 10 if they agreed to equal revenue distribution.

I don't really give a fuck. I would much rather have another game against our traditional league opponents than play Nebraska. This is merely my personal opinion, but it is one expressed by fans across the country (generally, not specific to Nebraska) after league realignment results in changes to their regular season schedule.
If I woke up tomorrow and learned that the Big 10 kicked out Nebraska, Maryland, and Rutgers, it would be a dream come true, but I know this will never happen.
Also, I don't blame Nebraska the slightest for my sentiments, so don't take my comments as shitting on Nebraska. In my humble opinion, Nebraska is just not a good fit the Big 10, geographically, culturally, or style of play.

Everyone should be "independent" like Notre Dame. If you want to schedule lots of games against traditional rivals (OK for Texas, SC for Notre Dame, OSU for MI, George for FL), go ahead and do it. Matter of fact, you can pack your schedule with your former conference-mates.
But conference championships are dumb as fuck. Why should a four loss NW team be in the Big 10 championship just because its in the western division, or whatever? Given the play-off, all championship games should be deleted and replaced with a quarterfinal playoff game. Teams go back to 12 games.
Also -- anyone playing FCS schools is prohibited from the playoffs.

I've always advocated for a euro-style relegation system. I do think we're headed in that direction. It's become more of a winner-take-all system with fewer and fewer schools able to draw decent attendance and make money while a select few see growing profits.

Real intellectual discussion here guys.
The actual answer is that realignment happens if and when the SEC says it does. Every other conference is cucked out and watered down now. The SEC knows it's big and shows it's big every year.

(but srsly it was recently ranked as best in FCS by some statfags but we'll never know until they actually start playing in the playoffs)
The FBS realignment is turning it into some NFL level of ((GC)) and it's gay as fuck

I have Citadel season tickets and I have a parking spot with my name on it about 150 yards from the ticket gates. I go with my little girl, it's not too crowded, it's not expensive, and I spend the entire day at the stadium. After the game, we go on the field and talk to the players.
We get 10-15k per game. The traffic isn't bad. There's no bathroom lines. Food is not horribly expensive. I pull into my spot and I'm less than 5 minutes from my seat, which is 9th row, 40 yard line, home side. If my girl has to go to the bathroom or my baby need a change, it's simple to get out.
Best of the deal is they sell beer at the stadium, and it was actually open bar in the end zone for season ticket holders at the last game. I had as much Gran Marnier as I wanted while watching the 'Dogs take it to the dreaded butt-pirates of CSU. Great, great game.
I always see a dozen people I know. My little girl always has a good time, there are never drunk trash cussing or fighting in the stands. The entire event is comfortable.
The football is exciting, almost all the games are televised.
I go to Clemson games or USC games, and they're fun, but I greatly prefer my Citadel games.

Yep.
I am a big wrestling fan and I always tell other wrestling fans to be careful what the wish for in terms of popularity.
I used to go to the New York Athletic Club's holiday wrestling tournament (for ex college wrestlers and Olympic hopefuls) and it was great. I'd literally sit right on the mat and watch national champions and world medalists, and I'd talk with guys who were Olympic champions.
No pretense, no fuss, no feeling like I was getting squeezed for every last buck. Just competition and camaraderie.
