Earliest memories / childhood thoughts on black people?

Date: December 13th, 2018 4:44 PM Author: bossy theater I didnt know any IRL black people, but saw some at a YMCA day camp. They were rowdy and louder than other kids. I mostly was curious about their hair. Around that time I remember seeing a music video with a black guy with dreads, and coming to the conclusion that black hair was somehow all thick, single stranded dreads, like the size of rope, and the boys I had seen at the Y must just crop these growths very short.
Anyway, other than the hair, I dont think I thought about blacks at all. Other than music videos, they werent on TV either. Maybe the guy on Sesame Street was an exception.

I never met one until HS, and the few there used to hang out together amongst themselves only and would hoot and holler in the hallway and were generally disruptive. It was awesome and I made a lot of friends. My coach was a super nice black dude who saw an emerging young point guard in me.
Up until that time I had no idea how frequently blacks used "y'all" and was thrown off.
Also, a specific memory was that one of the other coaches came up to me and said "If you get this question right, I'll buy you a coke." I agreed and he went on to ask "Would you suck a nigga's dick for a million dollars?" I said "no" and he followed up with "OK what would you suck one for?" to which I lied "I would never suck a dick". He then bought me a coke. |

He was also noticeably poorer, wore shoddy clothes. If we were all ten or eleven, his maturity was probably about 7. Nobody liked his hyper antics and he had a tough go.
I remember him crying and moaning one night after the counselors had left us all alone: "You guys dont like me because Im BLACK."
I remember wanting to respond, "No, it's because how you act." But I said nothing. |

One had a rotten tooth and I don't think his parents could afford to take him to the dentist, so his breath always stank really bad after that. Like really bad.
The other one was one of those gay kids that's so obviously gay you know they're gay before they've even gay and he would always go around quoting lines from the movie "First Wives Club" in like 5th/6th grade. He's probably in show business now.
Also maybe looking at the homeless people in the city, seemed to be a lot more when I was a kid. |

As I got promoted through honors classes I knew increasingly more asian kids, obviously, but even more than blacks they inhabited a separate world. People disliked blacks, but no one even had a strong opinion of the asian kids. They were like shadows. I also remember being interested in the hair. Spiky and shiny. Date: December 13th, 2018 5:49 PM Author: Talking drunken puppy I didn't really have any black kids in my elementary school or neighborhood, but I interacted with black adults since my Dad had black coworkers and he played in inner-city b-ball leagues down in the East Ferry area of Buffalo. So, black folks just seemed like athletic normal people to me. When I started going to cancer camp at age 9/10, I had a chance to interact with a lot of black and Puerto Rican kids who came up from downstate and I really hit it off with them. We all shared a love of old school hip-hop (this was late 80s/early 90s) and basketball. Through my Dad's work I also had a chance to meet and hang with some of the star Buffalo Bills players at the time (Thurman, Andre, Talley and Bruce Smith) and they were all cool dudes to me. So, my early interactions and feelings about blacks were all pretty positive. I didn't really have any negative interactions with blacks at all until I was in undergrad in California.

In third grade, at a private school on a military base, a black girl appeared in class midway thru the year and she was four years older than the rest of us. I did something naughty and told her and some other kids not to tell the teacher but she did anyway. She was really excited to tell on me. |

Noticed they matured physically much faster, were not bright, had super weird hair I really wanted to touch, and were from broken homes. Generally didn't give them much thought, and I was friends with one of them. Outside of school, I instinctively understood that when you saw a bunch of blacks on the street or in a mall, it was unsafe. Quite certain no one said anything racist/racial to me to put a bias in my head. |

He was a few years older than me. His dog could do tricks. I would try to get his dog to do those tricks and he would tell me I had to speak more forcefully when talking to a dog.
