70 iq, knuckle-dragging non-lolyer here. That out of the way:
Flynn talks to Russian counterpart as part of his duties as incoming NSA
Unbeknownst to Flynn, FBI wiretaps call
The fact Flynn talked to Russian guy is leaked to media (illegal) and paraded as part of collusion evidence
FBI asks him about conversation, Flynn evidently lies about what he said, in fear it would leak as evidence of Russian collusion
Flynn gets charged with lying to FBI despite having done nothing wrong other than the "lie". Jesus, the Logan Act.

Think Flynn might have discussed something about a tit for tat trade in Ukraine or whatever
Leaks that he did in the Wapo (bc of FBI wiretap)
Pence asks him if he did. Flynn panics (maybe he exceeded the mandate he was given), says he didn't (not knowing he was wiretapped)
FBI eventually nails him on the lie. Trump/Pence cut him loose bc collusion hysteria at insane levels at that point
I mean Jesus, libs were frothing at the mount re: the Logan Act

1) you assume that what Flynn was charged with was the extent of everything he did. The sentencing memo suggests otherwise since it shows his knowledge and assistance in two other non-russia investigations.
2) There is reporting of Flynn's involvement in a pay for play scheme for nuclear energy in the Middle East and the plan to kidnap a Turkish cleric in the US. Flynn's work and involvement in these may have merited additional and more serious charges. We still don't know much. The sentencing memo was heavily redacted.
3) "Flynn might have discussed something about a tit for tat trade in Ukraine or whatever". lol, at least you are coming around to the notion of some illegal quid pro quo (a far cry from where you were 2 years ago) but of course you quickly dismiss it as a mere "tit for tat" or "whatever". We don't know the details of this "tit for tat". Speculation that this was some grand and illegal conspiracy on Flynn is ridiculous given how little we know. It's especially dumb given his capable representation and his extensive cooperation (suggests he was facing additional and very serious charges).

1. If he did other crimes, prosecute him on other crimes. Using the Logan Act as a pretense to catch this guy in a lie during an interview after you illegally leaked a wiretap to the Wapo is bullshit.
2. Ditto
3. It was sanctions. The guy discussed whether or not Trump admin would go easy on sanctions. I thought it was something about Ukraine. Forgive me, all this hysteria is hard to keep straight. We ostensibly put this guy into jail for doing his job and "lying" about it to the FBI. The FBI threatened to prosecute him AND HIS SON for other crimes if he didn't plead guilty to this. That's bullshit
The FBI interviewed Hillary Clinton without putting her under oath and letting her have her lawyers in the room. Why give her that benefit and not Flynn?

First of all, even if he discussed sanctions, there is nothing wrong with that. Logan Act is bullshit ESPECIALLY during a transition.
The second question is whether he really even lied to the FBI by saying that he didn't discuss sanctions. We need the trqnscript of the call to confirm this, Which they haven't released.
My guess is that the Russian brought it up, and Flynn said to keep cool, and that was it.
They obviously had him and his son on something else, so he pleaded guilty to avoid that.
The FBI has disgraced themselves, but they will not face any consequences.

JFC, take it easy on me libs. I appreciate input from all chill bros (or at least people in a chill state of mind at the moment).
Okay. Didn't the FBI agents that interviewed Flynn originally conclude he didn't lie (e.g., Russian guy brought up a subject, Flynn redirected, and later claimed he didn't discuss the subject) and were directed to revisit their conclusions, or did they base their initial opinion on something other than accuracy of his statement, such as intent or materiality?

Speaking solely from a pedantic lawfag perspective, the facts outlined in the OP would in no way meet the requirements of an entrapment defense.
The fact that the government lied or engaged in subterfuge is not enough to establish that Flynn was induced into committing the crime.

yes, a crime that has existed in some shape or form since the first half of the 19th century (although obv not "to the fbi" but a broader "to the govt" rule)
we give you a 5th amendment right to shut the fuck up, so i'm cool with criminalizing lying
hell i think lying to your spouse should be criminalized: people lie too much and it's super shitty

I'm glad you said it first.
Entrapment isn't the word that I'd be using to complain about what happened.
And it's probably all bullshit, and the people involved are probably all scum, but I have a hard time feeling sorry for a person who listens to the FBI when they tell him, "Hey pal, it'd be a lot chiller if you didn't make things difficult by bringing a lawyer with you." At that point, lawyer or not, he shouldn't be talking to them at all. Does Flynn even read :D's poasts???
Lying to the FBI is kind of a lulzy crime though.

'A sitting National Security Advisor, former head of an intelligence agency, retired Lieutenant General, and 33-year veteran of the armed forces knows he should not lie to federal agents. He does not need to be warned it is a crime to lie to federal agents to know the importance of telling them the truth,'
- FBI met with Flynn in possession of tapes recordings of him that they did not make him aware of. Recording of which contained no illegal information. McCabe prefaced the meeting by claiming he could have a lawyer present but that would probably “delay matters further” you know this is just a chill meet up to chat about Russia.
An Andrew McCabe memo about lining up the interview stated: 'I explained that I thought the quickest way to get this done was to have a conversation between him and the agents only,” and that if Flynn wanted to include the White House counsel's office, McCabe would 'need to involve the Department of Justice.'
- wow
'The defendant undoubtedly was aware, in light of his “many years” working with the FBI, that lying to the FBI carries serious consequences.'
- Remember this whole time they made seem like meeting up without counsel was no big deal
'During the interview, the FBI agents gave the defendant multiple opportunities to correct his false statements by revisiting key questions,' the filing says. 'When the defendant said he did not remember something they knew he said, they used the exact words the defendant had used in order to prompt a truthful response.'
- Peter Strozk conducted this interview. Peter fucking Strozok. Translation here: we went over the same shit multiple times, worded multiple ways to make sure he fully lied about the info we had and did not disclose.
Mueller further notes that the Jan. 24 interview 'was voluntary, and lacked any indicia of coercion' and was conducted in Flynn's office at the White House without counsel present.
- Remember this is just a chill session, why bring a lawyer in to make it all unchill?
'Flynn was so talkative, and had so much time for them, that Strzok wondered if the National Security Adviser did not have more important things to do than have such a relaxed, non-pertinent discussion with them.'
- Lol Flynn gave them a tour of the fucking white house like a 180 bro and they fucked him
Flynn, a retired Army lieutenant general, spent three decades in the military, including five years in combat.
In a public statement after his plea, Flynn has said he cooperated with prosecutors because it was in 'the best interests of my family and our country.'

Did they fuck him? Without question.
Should he have known better? Absolutely. Remember, he’s no babe in the woods. He knows the drill and he let himself get in over his head.

It was a "false statements" sting. The FBI, at McCabe/Comey's direction, went to the White House with the clear purpose to induce a lie. Remember, they knew everything about the Russian ambassador conversation. Flynn knew they knew as well, if McCabe's contemporaneous "memo" is to be believed.
When the original interviewing agents left (Strzok/Pienta), they did not believe that Flynn intentionally lied. This is collaborated by Comey himself, and apparently also in the golden 302 from January that no one has ever seen.
After it is revealed to Mueller that Strzok is a biased piece of shit, around July 20, 2017, someone from the Special Counsel's office (which Strozk was a part of lol) interviewed Strzok about what happened in January. For some reason they wait another month, until August 22, 2017 to finalize that 302, which Flynn's lawyer's cited earlier this week.
There were two things filed on the docket today by Mueller: 1) McCabe's piece of shit memo from January 24 detailing his call with Flynn to setup the interview; and 2) the weird August 302 memo interviewing Strzok.
When you are making a FALSE STATEMENTS case, it is a problem that Memo #1 comes from known liar McCabe, that was fired from the FBI and criminally referred for his own false statements. It is also a problem that Memo #2 (the August 302) comes from the actual PROSECUTOR (just lol), and it memorializes a conversation they had with Strozk about what happened 6 months prior. It was around that time that Strzok, the interviewing agent, was removed from their own office for gross misconduct.
So, why in the ever living fuck would the DOJ ever proceed on a false statement case, despite knowing their only witnesses were literal liars themselves?
Weissmann is known for creating false testimony through threatening people, and also destroyed 302 drafts in past cases to hide evidence. It's his actual "thing" as a prosecutor. Interview, threaten purjury, and flip.
Also, I think they got a plea deal thinking they would never have to turn over exculpatory evidence. Mueller/Weissmann got really unlucky when they got assigned to Judge Sullivan. He has a standing order to turn over everything exculpatory even after a plea is reached. And that really fucked them in the ass.
Today, Mueller did not follow Sullivan's minute order which was very clear: file all 302s and related memorandums. I would love to see Sullivan ass-fuck these liars for their FRAUD ON THE COURT. However, I'm not too hopeful these days that right thing will be done.
So whether or not it's "entrapment" officially means little to me. Flynn plead guilty, probably to save his family.
However, never forget this fucked up shit: two FBI underlings were purposefully sent to the White House in the earliest days of the adminstration with the express purpose of creating a false statement case against the National Security Advisor to the POTUS.
According to the Strzok 302 interview, even Sally "Logan Act" Yates was MAF when she learned what Comey and McCabe ordered.

At 12:35 p.m. on January 24, 2017, the first Tuesday after the presidential inauguration, General Flynn received a phone call from then-Deputy Director of the FBI, Andrew McCabe, on a secure phone in his office in the West Wing.20 General Flynn had for many years been accustomed to working in cooperation with the FBI on matters of national security. He and Mr. McCabe briefly discussed a security training session the FBI had recently conducted at the White House before Mr. McCabe, by his own account, stated that he “felt that we needed to have two of our agents sit down” with General Flynn to talk about his communications with Russian representatives.21
Mr. McCabe’s account states: “I explained that I thought the quickest way to get this done was to have a conversation between [General Flynn] and the agents only. I further stated that if LTG Flynn wished to include anyone else in the meeting, like the White House Counsel for instance, that I would need to involve the Department of Justice. [General Flynn] stated that this would not be necessary and agreed to meet with the agents without any additional participants.”22

"Lying" to Pence about his discussions with his Russian counterpart about sanctions isn't a fucking crime
Removal as NSA? Sure. Crime? Still haven't convinced me
BTW he only "lied" because the Wapo ran an article about the entire leaked conversation beforehand (this leak being illegal because the fucking FBI wiretapped him and then sent the fucking tape illegally to a reporter) and Russia hacking hysteria was going full retard and Flynn probably panicked.
Still not a crime to be sentenced to jail for. Lose your job, sure.
