it's a good show with a lot of replay value, and I recently saw a MAF SJW tweet about how Michael Scott is a BIGOT and it's PROBLEMATIC that they make him likeable. Made me watch even more lol

also I'm pretty sure the % of internet traffic is based on the file size downloaded, and obviously streaming video sucks a lot of data. YouTube and porn are yuge too.

disappointing if true that he said that, but he is 100% correct that it would never make it to air today. Constant jokes about race, women, gays, fats, etc. It's 180, a relic of a simpler time, and it wasn't even that long ago at all. Sad.

way easier/faster to flip between seasons/episodes on a streaming platform than either of those options, especially DVDs. Also BT files take up space on your computer. Furthermore, Netflix is now built in to virtually all smart TVs right out of the box, making it incredibly easy to use.

The graphic is for Netflix percentage of show views, not show traffic, let alone total traffic. You're failing to account for longer shows (The Office averages 22min/episode), higher bitrate shows offered in UHD, and all of the movie streaming traffic.

Not flame, I was watching The Office last night. I've got a 400-movie DVD queue, there are tons of quality shows that I've been meaning to catch up on (Westworld, Billions, etc.), but the Casino Night episode cracks me up every time.

"The Good Place" has an amazing rewatch value, too, which I wouldn't expect because it's basically one twist after another. But it's so well-written that it's fun to go back and see things in the first episode that perfectly foreshadow what's happening in later episodes.

Yeah, that's basically what happened to me, though I still have a desire to finish (I hate not seeing shows through to the end, with the one exception being "How I Met Your Mother" because of how goddamn awful it got in later seasons). Except I don't have time because I'm too busy watching "The Office".

Black Mirror is really surprising. Shows like The Office, Friends, and Arrested Development are easily re-watchable - TBH I often keep one of these or other shows on in the background as I clean my place, cook, fix something, etc.

Black Mirror is a one and done mindfuck until you're done.

Bandersnatch sucked btw

yeah the format has potential imo, but the execution was lacking. Not enough truly divergent and fully developed storylines, lots of "go back and answer 'correctly' this time" shit

It was more impressive as a technical feat than as an entertainment experience. I can't imagine what went in to making sure it worked across all platforms. Hopefully they've now proved they can do it and then make something more interesting.

I watch Netflix original documentaries sometimes. I don't watch any of the fictional shows because I don't watch those shows anywhere.

They're not bad, but there's nothing especially good about them either. I don't know how to explain it exactly. They're all very serviceable and journeyman-like, but I've never seen a single one that stood out for being really interesting or well written or well narrated or anything. Like, BBC Nature documentaries stand out for great narration by David Attenborough and incredibly high quality cinematography. Grizzly man stands out for great music and found footage. Man on Wire stands out for portraying its story in an incredibly moving way. These Netflix docuseries never have any of these 'outstanding' features. They almost feel like they were put together by a solid team of writers, cameramen and editors but replaced the director with a committee or something.

They also have more money than they know what to do with, and want to use the sheer volume of content as a selling point, so they produce and buy a lot of crap. It's not all that different from the cable model, where they sell you on a package with 500 channels, many of which sound interesting, and then you watch like 5 of them regularly.

They may have had to disclose this to comply with securities regs, especially if there is a risk that they could lose the rights to these shows.

Nah, I think he's right, they never really release this kind of detail. Their viewership numbers are highly questionable. Blizzard went through the thing with World of Warcraft subscriber numbers (there was uncertainty how they were counting the time-based subscriptions prevalent in Asia) and eventually just stopped releasing them, if I recall correctly.

From a securities perspective, the more important things are subscriber counts; I can't imagine that "X% of our viewers like watching The Office" is truly material such that they'd have to disclose it.

It seems like a material risk if NBC/Fox can pull 20% of the shows that your users actually watch, but maybe not

I'm sure the risk of shows being lost is described generally in the material risks section, but the actual show-by-show breakdown isn't something I'd expect them to have to report. If anything, listing the shows increases the risk because it provides targets for the networks/producers to go after. I imagine they make reps along the lines of companies that operate in China do, which basically just amount to "the Chinese government can pepper our angus if they so choose to".

Jumpshot generates its data by looking at web browser activity on an anonymized global panel of 100 million web devices from which it sees billions of online actions each day. For this data set, every time a U.S.-based device went to a Netflix web page to play a TV episode or movie, that counts as a view.

Netflix has said in the past that the overwhelming majority of its views come from people watching on connected TVs, and Jumpshot’s data doesn’t measure that behavior. But it’s reasonable to assume that people who watch Netflix via browsers and people who watch on Rokus or Xboxes tend to watch the same stuff. Netflix declined to comment.
