The principal students involved in the cheating scandal surrounding Con Law I have been discovered (I'm not going to name names). The students implicated have begun naming other students. Dean Ramos (dean of Student Affairs) is fixing the curve for the remaining students in section 3. More info to follow.

Dismissed as in kicked out of law school? Or just failed the class?
edit: also, what was the method of cheating?

Some are being told to return to Austin for pending honor code violations councils (the method used to expel students here). They will be allowed to argue that they should not be expelled, but there is a pretty heavy presumption against them in cases like this. Others are going to probably be given an F with a disciplinary mark on their record and will be required to retake the class Pass/Fail in the fall.
The students hid notes outside the classroom and used the internet during a closed book test. Some students met with each other during the test.

I've only talked one girl about it. She didn't really want to talk about it, obviously. They are all trying to lay low and get there shit together, it seems. Most of them aren't in Austin right now, anyways.
A few of these students had firm jobs and judicial internships that they will probably have to quit.

Even the F with notation on their transcript is fucking brutal - that kind of thing will follow you for a really long time. As much as I hate cheating, it seems kind of sad that this one incident can ruin someone's life for many years.
edit - I mean, I guess it doesn't ruin their lives, just derails them a little. But in xoxo terms it ruins their lives.

They should have known better.
If they get a slap on the wrist it will also create a shiTTTy precedent at whats supposed to be a prestigious T15.
The sympathy and compassion thing just doesn't work here. Why exactly should they not be expelled - what kind of message does this send to serious students at UT?
Pls note that I'm usually not a stickler for this kind of thing, but by the time you get to law school you should not be cheating on exams.
Exams in law school mean the difference between jobs and clerkships. Maybe I'm a gunner in the making but this kind of thing ought to be taken pretty seriously.

my point is that they aren't dead, they aren't permanently crippled, they still have their health, they have their families, they can still get relatively well-paying jobs . . . their lives aren't ruined.
But for xoxo, losing your shot at biglaw (maybe permanently) is life-ruining.

I imagine it went something like
- pin at least 1 based on fingerprints
- give those fingerprinted the opportunity to stay, with an F, and pass/fail in the fall, *if* they implicate others, or else they get summarily expelled

This post is probably the only even remotely prestigious thing you've ever done with your life.
That being said, they made a rational calculation based on the benefits of cheating, the risk of getting caught, and the punishment that would occur if they did get caught.
They lost their bet. Now they can twist in the wind.

i can't believe you guys haven't discussed how horrible the cheating plan was. i mean GOING OUTSIDE TO TALK; 13 PEOPLE. horrible plan. the notes in the bathroom isn't a bad idea. but to have 13 people share is ridiculous.

Based only on these threads - it Does sound like a painfully stupid plan. 13 adults colluding in the hallway and getting notes from the bathroom during an ongoing exam....thats the part that seems weird.
I guess things like this have to happen every once in awhile to reinforce how TTT some schools are. I'll talk to Leiter in Chicago about how this might be factored into his magical rankings.

I know very little about this unfolding story but I don't believe for a second that the administration actually took latent prints from outline in bathroom and matched them to student prints from LSAT registration. No way. First of all that process would take a long time (to retrieve prints and see if there are any matches). Crime labs have heavy backlogs and they take a while to conduct these analyses. No way could they have turned them around so quickly. Also, these labs have more important things to do--like solving violent crimes.
Second of all, I doubt UT would actually go so far as to try and fingerprint the outline.
A far more plausible scenario is that the administration bluffed and told students that they were about to analyze outline for prints. And students under suspicion freaked out and gave names of other suspected communists.
Of course this is all complete conjecture on my part.

actually a point should be made that this scheme was pretty sophmoric....they were gonna meet in the bathrooms to talk about the exam and look at an outline they hid? did the same people keep taking bathroom breaks? at my school only 1 person can go at a time, but regardless, this sounds like a middle school plan.
