i really just do not understand how some of these people's kids end up as such inexplicably worthless trash. almost everyone i've ever met has ended up more or less like their parents once they are adults. why is it so drastically different for these people just because they grew up in a wealthy environment? |

I’m sorry to bring this up as some posters will never forget me saying this but my own family tree reflects this. We have never been genuinely rich but solidly UMC and even borderline rich (small town wealth) going back to the 18th century America. But there are other lines with common ancestors that descended into non entity. I went through a brief period when I googled the distant cousins that shared common ancestors just to see where people ended up. And it’s interesting. So why should some lines maintain the “intelligence” while others didn’t?
I’ve concluded that the answer, at least part of the answer, lies in who you married. If you married a bright woman your kids were likely to be bright. If you married a stupid woman, the kids regressed to the mean and their kids did even worse. |

Success is correlated with intelligence, but not as much as people pretend. It is just that idiots just equate intelligence with money, so everyone thinks the CEO of X company is a genius even though the average Syracuse law student outperformed this "genius" on every measurement up until he founded this company. If you look at most multi-millionaires, they weren't phi beta kappa at Harvard, and if you look at most people who were phi beta kappa at Harvard, they're not multi-millionaires.
Combine that with the fact that if you exist in the world you surely see families that have 1 smart kid and 1 dumb kid, and it is a wonder anyone could think this way. |

children from the same parents varying greatly in intelligence (or any other quantifiable characteristic) is also very rare. it happens, just not very often |
