Working Americans are struggling to save, according to a Bankrate survey. More than 20% reveal they are not saving “at all,” a figure that has remained the same since 2016. Almost half of working adults are saving something — but only around 10% of their yearly incomes (just 16% say they are able to save at least 15%). The low saving rate has been blamed on high levels of student debt, the lack of wage growth and increased living costs.

Some of these are not like the other. India and China - because they don't trust the government to take care of them, and rightly so.

Japan was in this boat post-WW2, and I think it is sticking. In general though, aging population = more focus on saving.

Germany: also was in a terrible state post-WW2, so culture adapts.

"More than 4 in 10 households (45 percent) earning less than $30,000 per year aren’t saving any money. "

I think it's actually more shocking that 60% of households earning less than $30,000 are saving something. Maybe it's $50 per month or something. I can't imagine saving money on that sort of HHI, even if you're a single man.

I know guys that make 250 grand a year plus, and they choose to wear cheap shoes often with holes in them (because they are comfortable) , drive older but reliable cars and live in modest homes. I also know guys that make 40 grand a year and wear $200 tennis shoes, carry $1500 cell phones, always have a brand new car in the driveway, and are mortgaged to the hilt on a McMansion. Savings is a choice and a lifestyle.

Even people who make good money are saving very little

Only 1 in 6 is saving at least 15% of their income

which means they're fucked

even if the 1/6 made $200k, they are saving $30k+ a year which is not even close to enough for retirement.

Articles like this are shit in really clarifying saving vs. investing but based on the numbers, it seems like they mean all saving and investing combined

I find that harder to believe. We get to 15% just with maxing 401k matching.

You are one of the 1 in 6 that is doing at least that much

The numbers are legit, I have seen many studies that show most Americans save next to nothing on a monthly basis

it doesn't make sense for us to save anything until our student debt is gone. that interest rate is much higher than the after-tax interest rate we could achieve in the market.

It's just not possible to save enough for it to be worth the aggravation.

You want it to be the other way, but it's this way.

Nah. The one good thing is that you can get like 2.3% interest for online savings accounts again. Still miss the 5% interest rates for accounts from the mid-2000s.
