The reality of it, not the history book anecdotes about knights and chivalry and shit. The prolonged torture by burning, disemboweling, stoning, bludgeoning, and worse. Not to mention the disease, famine, random intrusions by noble assholes on your homestead to rape your daughter, if she wasn’t already dead at 14 from giving birth. And all for nothing. Sad!

a "mild" torture like having hot skewers driven lengthwise through the undersides of your feet (but being otherwise unharmed) sounds unbearable by today's standards.

Dude, there are surviving records. Even as late as 1563 you have Acts and Monuments by John Foxe - an account of torture and martyrdom that is 4 times longer than the Bible.

as late as? That is during the Protestant Reformation when you can expect a struggle of beliefs and accompanying violence. Even then, a lot of this is propaganda to show how awful the other side is. Foxe is the height of Prod propaganda.

Before the Reformation the CHurch tried to stamp out heresy, but again, unless you were a fanatic or unless your neighbor wanted to screw you over, you wouldn't be worried about torture.

you guys are both right in a way, especially in regard to the (imo wrongly) infamous catholic inquisitions---the inquisitors themselves were often very benign (at least for that time period). you were much more likely to get sentenced to a series of prayers, fined, or ordered to wear a yellow patch of some sort on your clothing. pilgrimages or short stints of corvee labor were also common, probably more common than outright torture or burning

it really depended on what area you lived in and who your religious overlords were. the church's own officials were regularly lenient with minor heresies or blasphemous behaviors, often moreso than the secular officials in charge with investigating and sentencing religious crimes (and under the State, that category was very broadly defined, sometimes more than under the Church)

it wasn't that bad, considering

late antiquity would've been a much worse time to be alive---the world as europeans knew it was in freefall, you had plagues coming from the south and the east, odd weather patterns ruining a large portion of the population's livelihood, new suzerains setting up shop in your neighborhood each month, unaffiliated bands of warriors running amok through your lands and your village as the Roman state collapsed, etc

in comparison to late antiquity, the middle ages were a time of great beauty and security for most segments of the european population

honestly in a lot of ways the average mindset of a man in europe during the middle ages was far more robust, inspired, and healthy than one of a man in the throes of modernity. their beliefs burned hot enough to cut through the murk of a difficult and genuinely perilous existence & they had much more respect for the concept of a truly virtuous life than their post 1900s descendants did

i have a lot of appreciation for the psychological furniture that existed in the minds of men from those centuries, anthropological or psychological studies of works and people from that period are nearly always uplifting to read

feel free to dm me if you want a few reading recs to help illuminate your understanding of that period, i can rummage through my shelves for you

I made a thread a while back about how impressive Gothic architecture is and how it spoke to the brilliance of the best minds back then. There is a lot to recommend it over 2019 America, no doubt. I still feel that being an average guy would have been a pretty miserable experience, though I am naturally pessimistic and morbid by temperament so maybe it’s just me.

well we can't really teleport ourselves into the heads of someone from that period---our minds, the manner of our thought, and the way we ascribe value to things are all very different in modernity

the medieval Christian knight was a perpetually half-manic fanatic in a state of significant psychological arousal, strongly possessed by his deeply-held loyalties and virtues and often inspired to tackle the impossible by a great profundity of pure feeling

the great incendiary flame of his mental geography is nearly completely alien to our own detached, blase state of psychological being. we're little sparks flickering off of the flint of a bic compared to his burning hot pressurized phosphorous

People could comprehend heated water and not needing to go outside to piss or having to smell their own shit if they use a chamber pot. They might not be thinking "I would like a toilet that has a good powerful flush function" but they knew they didn't like the chamberpot/outhouse arrangement.

I can comprehend never growing old and being able to live forever just fine even if it is technologically out of my reach. Someday people will look back at us and say it was barbaric how we grew old and died. And they will be right.

How would that work exactly if no one died? Overpopulation would plague the planet as we depleted all natural resources.

It’s more like people will look back and regard us as barbarians for not having legalized painless euthanasia, imho.

Yeah great answer, very cheeky. Where do you get a gun when you’re sucking tubes on a hospital bed? And what if you survive the shot anyway?

I already have a gun and I wouldn't survive the shot because I am competent and not a moron. These are not exactly insurmountable barriers. If you cant get that to work - you're basically using an outhouse in 2019. I mean sure, you could do it and complain about it. But it's uncalled for.

lol @ Mandy suggesting cancer victims should just procure a gun (from...somewhere?) and shoot themselves in the face

when we have barbiturates that can ensure a painless, peaceful non-mutilating death in minutes.

Why do people try to step to Blue Smoke when things involving drugs are concerned? WHY?

Listen you fool barbiturates have been around since the early 20th century. They are no longer under patent by any pharmaceutical company because drug patents don't last 80 years lol.

They're cheap as fuck and no "big pharma exec" would give a shit about them because they bring in no money.

Space travel ad birth control plus people will start taking stupid risks to make them feel alive.

Anyway, that's not how technology works. We don't just stop progress because "oh no, think what it could do to society in 100 years!". We're operating on a quarterly profits basis. If they find a way to extend life or prevent aging, rest assured they will be putting it on the market asap.

You are an optimist.

Again, I think it is relative to what your expectations are. If you never had to worry about growing old and dying, does that necessarily mean your life is better? Would you still have kids?

There was no anorexia in the middle ages. People were not sitting around the local tavern complaining about sitting in an office all day at Morty's beck and call.
