they haven't done any of that shit and really haven't improved anything since 2007 even though they clearly could. I don't think MS and GC wants to make excel any bigger than it currently is. there are A LOT of jobs where all people do is move shit around between spreadsheets and GC probably wants to wipe all of those out.

I don't buy it. Entire businesses are run on Excel and very little of the logic in any given spreadsheet can be generalized to another. What's more is that most people are too dumb to code, so devs are a luxury for most of the economy.

Microsoft isn't making it better because they don't have to. Theres no credible competitor and small businesses aren't going anywhere.

Gene therapy/genetic engineering will start to take off. I don't think the real impact of that will be fully felt but you'll start seeing shit cured that didn't use to be curable. Moral panic is going to start being more palpable as people realize that rich people really are going to end up with smarter/healthier/stronger kids that will be able to pass on those traits.

Self-driving cars will become a thing and commercial uses will start coming out. People underestimate how much economic upheaval there will be as a result of this.

Commercial drones similarly are going to become a bigger thing.

General automation is going to continue. More and more "normal jobs" are going to be done by software.

Also, in terms of how different it will be, I think potentially massive as trends we're seeing now continue. Pretty sure by 2030 the US will be unrecognizable to people today. That will be less as a direct result of technology and more because of culture and demographic changes.

"Hk is a rigged economy that only benefits a few oligarchs."

In that regard that is true but the reality is that it is a middle/upper-middle/rich city-state. The US cannot look like that. This goes to Brazil (and South Africa, for that matter) again, which also has a similar economy but with more entrenched poverty.

"China culturally is nationalist but politically it is an authoritarian centralized one party state and that is coming here."

Yes, but the party is going to be very different. It is going to be more like the ANC in South Africa.

These comparisons make no sense. Minorities in the US have effective control over one of the two major political parties. Blacks and hispanics already have prominent roles in politics, media, business etc. Not even close similarly to Brazil.

Its retarded that, in order to stare at a screen all day, we bend our necks to stare at a little rectangle in our hands.

I got a BMW with a twin-turbo V8 that was basically new (several months old) for like 30% off sticker and with extra warranty to boot. And it got put on a truck and driven to my house. What could possibly be "strange" about this?

Voice assistants will actually be pretty decent. Combine that with Internet of Things and we should be able to control most things in our house using Google Assistant or Siri (lol).

Self driving cars aren't happening in 10 years. The fact that there isn't a single autonomous semi truck on highways today goes to show how difficult it is to get a computer to handle the chaos of reality.

I disagree with this. The technology is brand new and improving by leaps and bounds. What you're missing is that once it starts getting deployed, it is going to be an avalanche.

Worst case scenario: I wouldn't be surprised if highway lanes start being dedicated to autonomous vehicles/trucks, which will start communicating with one another. That would remove a ton of the risk (there's no human factor to consider there).

The most interesting applications of self-driving for GC are not you driving around your neighborhood. It is the millions of trucks on the road that drive goods from one warehouse to another. If you can automate that then you can fire a huge amount of people. Plus, these trucks will a) be safer, b) don't need to sleep/rest

Assumes you don't have external infrastructure in place. For example - you have a truck that is driving. Truck sensor fails, but if trucks are in communication with both one another and a third party array then that truck can continue to be remotely and automatically piloted by AI.

Also, for commercial applications you can have a) more sensors and b) have sensors be self-cleaning.

Waymo was founded ten years ago. You can't code for every eventuality. There is no such thing as AI and until there is, autonomous driving will probably be limited to custom-built cities (see Google in Toronto) or semis on highways with drone operators standing by to take over control.

"limited to custom-built cities (see Google in Toronto)"

That infrastructure will be a blueprint for many cities.

"or semis on highways with drone operators standing by to take over control."

That will become more common, but AI will also increasingly play a role here (it'll just be integrated into the infrastructure, rather than just on the truck - think of an AI air traffic controller)

Right. In general, it is easier to add a lane to many highways than it is to build totally different railroads to new locations. Also, such lanes would be useful for multiple things. Your self-driving truck will share that lane with self-driving busses, cabs, cars, etc.

Deepfake technology is getting scary, and there'll probably be a huge movie trend where dead actors get "resurrected"; expect lots more "de-aging" of old-as-fuck actors, though I guess you could say that's already a thing

I'd also expect advances in AI that let talentless people compose high-quality images and animation

Gene editing will kick into high gear. First humans genetically modified for extreme strength, agility, and intelligence will be created in China. The olympic Games in 2036 and 2040 will fall apart because of this.

US will turn into a surveillance state due to big tech.

There will be no anonymity on the internet.

as the country gets dumber and more third-worldized, there will be increasing impetus to rely upon technology to paper over our "human capital" shortcomings. stuff like automated diagnostics will become big in medicine as the system collapses from overspending and "iatrogenic" conditions inside of hospitals become catastrophic. surveillance will become privatized and much more widespread as our low-trust society attempts to maintain some degree of order.
