It's the same reason people hate the DMV even though they manage to successfully keep track of millions of driver licenses and plates.
There is every reason to believe that if the US govt ran health insurance or hospitals that we would have the same awful service and cost overruns as the USPS. |

The other issue constraint is that USPS has to serve basically every address for the price of a stamp. If Fedex was required to deliver a letter from New York to Anchorage for $0.55 there is no way they'd be making any money.
EDIT: I'm not saying this is a bad thing, it's an inherently unprofitable service but one that's nonetheless pretty necessary. |

it’s got 15 billion of debt and loses money almost every year. ups/fedex already cover the higher margin, denser populated regions. for the most part we all subsidize the post office to make sure people in out of the way regions get their spam paper mail in 2 days like everyone else.
the real question is why not abolish it eventually and have everyone make due with private carriers. once driverless vehicles are fully ramped i suspect almost everywhere will have access to fast shipping. |

I once went to one that offered neither envelopes nor those clear plastic sleeves to put a shipping label in. They would sell you an envelope for a dollar, and they would tape a shipping label onto your package for five dollars (even if you had it all boxed up with a prepaid shipping label ready to go). When I called UPS corporate, they confirmed that the stores get all those supplies for free but they don't actually have to provide them, which is insane. And the staff were all complete assholes. |
