not at all
you could win the USO every even year and Wimbledon every odd year and never "defend"
the idea of a defense is silly anyway. if you win 2 US Open titles, for example, who cares whether you win them in years 1 and 3 vs 1-2 or 2-3?

canada has suffered incredibly in recent years. nobody plays it in olympic years. and with veteran guys being exempt masters requirements, fed/djoker often havent been playing canada in recent years.

that is a very unique set of circumstances though.
and that only really proves that Cinci is viewed as better prep for the USO than Canada is, and I'd agree.
the sunshine double is in a very odd spot on the ATP calendar, and given that IW is so prestigious, Miami suffers.

i do, but the US Open is still historically MUCH more prestigious (and today it's still more prestigious).
let's compare it to golf. the USO in golf has taken a dive in prestige, for a variety of reasons, which has caused it to get "passed" by the Masters and the British in most circles.
the problem is that the AO is more analogous to the PGA. it lacks the history and the identity of the other 3 majors, and was mostly an afterthought until the 90s. shit, Agassi didn't even play a match there until 1995, and at that point he had won 2 majors and been to 5 major finals and finished in the top 10 SIX times.
there is so much history on the side of the USO, and it being in the US makes it a lot more prestigious too, especially coming off the US hardcourt swing. being last in the season also makes it critically important for players, whereas the AO is kind of at a weird time, and anyone who waits for the end of the ATP season to have surgery is likely going to miss the AO.
i would GUARANTEE that more players want to win the USO over the AO, and by a significant margin. indeed, we saw in our "three Major combinations" thread that the AO was really the least valuable, and i really contend that, in the abstract, the most valuable feature of the AO is that it helps a winner complete the career grand/golden slam. again, in the abstract, most people wouldn't want more AO titles past 1 or 2.
finally, the AO strikes me as the WUSTL of the Majors. it's trying to gain favor and prestige via cash and slick production value, but that's not really what the game is about.
that said, i credit the AO for pulling itself up from irrelevancy to being thought of a solid major, but it would take a very, very long time for it to ever be considered more prestigious than the USO.
