For the last year, I’ve been on and off again with this guy multiple times. We started off dating, but we weren’t really getting to know one another in any way except physically. That’d be great if I could do that and not get attached. I got really attached, but played the dumbass “cool girl” role. He faded in and out of my life, presumably fading out whenever something better got his attention. Each time he would do this, I’d become depressed and never said how upset this made me, except to my therapist. I couldn’t stop making it about myself and wondering why I couldn’t keep his interest. Being with him, and I use that term loosely because we were not in a relationship, gave me some of the biggest highs that I’ve had in terms of the sex, but it mostly gave me a lot of lows and feelings of worthlessness. I have never been so sad.

And every time I got better and started feeling normal again, and not constantly thinking about him, he’d come back. And I, like a drug addict, disregarded what’s good for me and went back. He gave me zero emotional support, yet I’d go back. He rarely asked about me and my life, yet I’d go back. He’d fade away, without ever telling me he was done for the moment. Even though we were casual, I just asked that we tell each other if we became sexually involved with others so we could make informed choices, and he failed to tell me that he was involved with someone. Despite all this, I kept going back.

Eventually, I told him how I felt. It was really hard. It is hard to be vulnerable with someone you really trust, let alone someone who hurt you. He was kind about it. He said he’d try to see if we could be something else. I was so happy. I had hope. I knew it was unlikely to work, but I let myself feel hope and happiness. I thought maybe I’d get something good out of all the pain I had felt. But he didn’t really seem to try. He was nicer, but I think that was mostly him feeling guilty and not knowing what to do with me now that I wasn’t just a sex thing. His actions showed me that this wasn’t what he wanted. So it ended. There was an actual end this time, so in some ways that felt better. But now there is the hopelessness of thinking I’ll never see him again and it makes me so sad, even though I know he is like poison to me. How can I be so sad over a man who never gave me anything more than crumbs? I am sadder now than I’ve been over real relationships ending. Maybe because I never got what I wanted out of this one. How do you feel hope again?

And what if he comes back? Will I be strong enough to stay away? The sad thing is, it makes me even more sad to think he may never contact me again.
