been selected to go with Cohen, Li, and Singh into the data room to find them. As I'm sure you'll appreciate, no one can know about the nature of this mission. If you were also to become lost in the data room, we would, of course, be required to disclaim any knowledge and simply report you AWOL."
"Understood, sir. And my children?"
"Should anything happen, they will be taken care of," says the partner, placing a Davis Polk embroidered messenger back brimming with cash on your lap. "Transport leaves at 0500."
The partner turns around to leave. He pauses in your doorway, still facing away from you. "Oh, and if it turns out the deal team went native, you'll be expected to liquidate all assets."

As I set out on this journey, I think about the life I have lived these past fourteen years, always in service to the firm. I am cool and collected as I contemplate the tasks before me, aware that I must execute them to my utmost ability in order to ensure the safe return of the missing team. I understand the risks that are presented by this mission and am able to place them within the broader context of my skills and objectives in order to assess my likelihood of success and the optimal path to achieving that outcome.
But still. I must acknowledge that there is a part of me questioning the purpose of this request. Each of the attorneys who composed the deal team represented the highest refinement of expertise, competency, lethality within our profession. Our best and brightest stars. If they have truly gone missing, is this because of an unintended consequence? Or a desire on their part to no longer be found? If the latter, to what degree should the firm exhibit control over the lives of its people? To force the retrieval of those who wish to go missing? If I wished to be absorbed into the great silent mass of humanity outside the confines of our work, would I be allowed to? Would any of us?
I must keep my thoughts clear. "Excellence in execution; clarity in task; fineness in control; the principles of our organizational grandeur." The motto rings in my head even as I contemplate all these things. Be still. I may not see my family again, but if I die, it will be in devotion to the glory of the firm and all that it represents, world without end, one law, one partnership. I cannot do this alone; I will require the assistance of others, skilled in the arts of litigation and warfare. They have assigned me a supporting group. Children. I need to seek out other poasters if this is to be accomplished.
Close entry.
