44-year-old Henderson man charged in shooting death of 17-year-old
HENDERSON, Nev. (KSNV) — The Henderson Police Department said it responded early Thursday morning to reports of gunshots near Sunset Road and Whitney Ranch Drive.
A preliminary investigation indicated that officers found two 17-year-olds had been located near a business. One individual was deceased with an apparent gunshot wound, another had no injuries.
Officers later spoke with 44-year-old Edward Croaker who had told officers he saw the two teens shooting at the rear of his home near 1600 Meadow Bluffs Avenue.
Afterward, Croaker had returned fire and he believed he had struck one of the boys.
Police later confirmed that both juveniles had been discharging a firearm, which had been reported stolen to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Croaker was booked into the Henderson Detention Center on one count of murder. Charges remained pending for the juvenile.
No further details will be released an the investigation remains ongoing, the press release noted.
The name of the 17-year-old killed will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office pending notification of next of kin.
The shooting marked the tenth homicide for the City of Henderson.

At that point, Burch-Estes took a Glock firearm from his backpack and fired one round toward Sunset Road. Lino then began to fire the weapon multiple times in “an unknown direction,” according to the report. Croaker was in bed, playing games on his cellphone when he heard the loud gunshots behind his house. He had already been on high alert: His vehicle had been keyed, his tires slashed and someone had entered his home through an unlocked door, according to the police report. Croaker told police he believed it was his son’s former drug dealers. So when Croaker, then 44, heard the shots, he picked up his Glock 19 and opened his bedroom window. He saw the two teens in the parking lot, and Lino holding the black pistol. Another shot was fired, which “placed him in fear for his life,” according to the report. He said he fired three rounds through his screen, striking Lino, the report states. Croaker then said he laid down on the floor and called 911. Burch-Estes told police he saw Lino “twirl around” and fall to the ground. He placed Lino’s head on his backpack. A neighbor who opened his back door when he heard the rapid shots told police he heard a voice yelling, “Hang in there, don’t die on me.” Burch-Estes picked up the weapon and hid it in a nearby dumpster, and also “picked up one cartridge case and threw it in an unknown location, causing a delay in the investigation,” the report says.
Croaker told police he saw Burch-Estes pace back and forth, yelling “come on motherfucker,” very aggressively. Burch-Estes was later arrested on charges of destroying evidence, discharging a firearm where people might be endangered and possession of a stolen firearm."

Flagstaff is a much different place. That's why I started off specifically talking about desert cities. Once you decide to consider Flagstaff, you might as well toss in competitors in Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico.
One less considered downside is how windy it is in the spring. |
