First, it isn't really clear why they are getting a divorce. Like they seem to get along just fine and actually like each other. It sort of seemed like they were trying to normalize divorce as saying "oh wow even people who read in bed with their kid together get divorced' - but then the message should be that getting divorced is stupid.
Second, Chuck Klosterman was saying that even though the title is called "marriage story" implying this could be about anyone, anywhere in the country, this was a hyper-specific story about a play director and an actress. The movie would've been a lot better if instead of spending 20 minutes watching this pretentious play rehearsals, we saw Adam Driver have an awkward interaction with an old friend of the couple, or talk to his brother in law after the brother in law found out he cheated.
There's also something that is just offputting about the writer's avatar in the movie winning a genius grant. |
