Aren't they 80% the same? You prefer slightly more overweight in the top 500 stocks vs. total market?

Most important thing is fees. If your Target Retirement fund is greater than .15 you're getting fucking hose.

a target retirement fund adjusts its asset allocation based on your age to become more conservative you get closer to retirement. the vanguard 2065 fund won't change its allocation for decades under the current glide path.

this says 0.15

Is this the only relevant fee or is there some other layer of fees I should know about

No, that's fine and .15 is okay. Just put all your money in there and don't worry about then.

There was a study and the average woman has way more money in their retirement account (when controlling for age, salary, etc.) because they just set it up and then forget about it.

An index fund with .04 in fees reduces your portfolio value 30 years hence by 1.59 percent.

Your target date fund with .15 in fees reduces your portfolio value 30 years hence by 5.83 percent.

If you put it in some fund with .75 in fees it reduces your portfolio value 30 years hence by 26 fucking percent.

In other words, in 30 years at a 6 percent ROR, $10k today can become $101k, $96.8k or $76.1k depending on the fees.

And the average offering from most employers includes funds with .75 or worse annual fees.

You should view as part of your overall portfolio allocation. I wouldn’t view as separate. Due to the tax advantages, you should allocate assets that spit off dividends/are tax inefficient; like you would with a Roth.
