Why the economy will not help Trump win re-election

This is why Obama won in 2012 despite a mediocre economy because it was still far better than 2008 when we were on the cusp of a Great Depression. Most voters are not that better off now than they were in 2016.
-Trump's appeal is cultural, not economic. And his style has alienated suburban whites who normally would vote GOP but will vote Dem regardless of the nominee due to their hatred of Trump.
-If Biden is the nominee, he outperforms Hillary with blacks and college educated white suburbanites. If Bernie is the nominee, he outperforms Hillary with working class whites in the Rust Belt and brings out disaffected voters. In 2016 Trump got 12% of Bernie primary voters; an additional 13% of Bernie voters went third party. |
