Michael Jackson hit me 20x harder than Kobe did.

Prince hit me a lot harder than Kobe too.

With Kobe I was just like "WTF that's unbelievable! Totally sucks" but it didn't have the same effect on my life as MJ and Prince.

I was pissed because I never got to see either Prince or MJ live, and both were extremely important to me musically. I fucking grew up loving both of them since i was 6 years old. I'm sure both were insufferable in person (or maybe they were cool, either way), and in that regard you are right it didn't affect me. But seeing literal childhood heroes die, who I still admired greatly and wanted to one day see live, was a big hit to me.

It's not grieving like the death of a friend or family member but i think one can be affected in a few ways:

1. empathy for the surviving family members. sure it's easy to say people die all the time but when faced with a specific example it's natural to feel for the family who just lost a young dad and 13 year old daughter.

2. empathy for the deceased. same logic as above. guy had half his life in front of him. gone in the blink of an eye.

3. feeling of personal loss. yes, i did not know kobe bryant personally. i admired him as an athlete and entertainer for the 20 years he was in the NBA. there is an eerie feeling that a part of my own life history or experience is gone. it's also a reminder of my own mortality that even iconic figures like Kobe Bryant still just return to dust like the rest of us. sure this is a narcissistic perspective but i think natural nonetheless.

4. you have aspergers.

I mean sure. Part of my sadness is the realization that my youth is also fading away, that my childhood hero can die like that with his 13 year old daughter and her friends & family who should've had a full life ahead of her.

And another aspect is that to us, Kobe was this larger-than-life figure that if anyone were to survive a helicopter crash and save everyone onboard somehow, it was Kobe.

Just seeing the mortality of this larger-than-life figure was a bit of a shock.

For me the method of death is most chilling: he maed it, retired to raise his family, and died nonsensically with his daughter.

it's the celebrity version of a cop dying two days from retirement.

I mean the thing is for me, growing up in LA, literally EVERYONE around me was a Lakers and Kobe fan.

It was the one thign that really bound my friend group together, the Lakers - I still talk to a lot of my HS friends mostly about the Lakers and to a lesser extent the Dodgers, and for all of us, KObe was our hero in middle school and high school.

Idk man as shallow as those IG posts could be, they also got a lot of us to reconnect & reminisce. For that alone, fuck it.

Yeah the whole IG culture is stupid, but so is actively being pissed off about it when people want to reminisce and mourn for their childhood heroes

Not really. This is the second black celebrity to die from insisting on flying in an aircraft in dangerous conditions.

Cr. Other celebs it's not unsurprising because you know they abuse drugs or live a high risk lifestyle but Kobe was like tom Brady obsessed with living super clean and work ethic and shit and otherwise really healthy. Jarring that he'd die so young. But also weirdly appropriate because it's hard to picture him as an old man.

I think Heath Ledger wasn't especially shocking since he'd already broken up his engagement with his drug use. But it was super depressing, mainly bc you thought about it repeatedly over an entire year-plus since Dark Knight didn't come out for another six months and then was the biggest movie that summer, and an award season contender for the entire six month period leading up to his own posthumous Best Actor. But he was also not even 30 and had a young daughter and there was the intrigue that it was a product of him going too method for the part. Overall it just had more of a sense of someone who was already a super A list star who still had potentially decades left to be at the top of his field, combined with the assumption that it was an accident.

Heath Ledger was pretty shocking but we're a little more used to actors and rock stars dying prematurely. Also, Kobe was just a step up in fame; he was probably the most famous athlete in the entire world at his peak.

Yeah, that's all correct. But I think Kobe is sort of a litmus test for how much of a hardcore sportsnut you are/how much you correctly fear and avoid helicopters. Like I specifically remembered the story about him taking Steve Blake to the doctor from 2009 or whatever when I first heard, because I have devoted entirely too much space in my brain to sports trivia for the past 30 years. The moment in the afternoon when ABC was saying the daughters were on the helicopter made it 1000x worse, and then hearing that was wrong made it a lot less sad, then hearing that his one daughter was on the helicopter and it was 9 people total made it way worse again.

Kobe was a huge star with a family and a clean lifestyle, and he's remained in the limelight with his post-NBA work and Oscar win. All the artists/actors/rappers that have died I presumed were on drugs/booze and/or living a high-risk stupid lifestyle, so there wasn't anywhere near this same level of shock. Only other similar death I can think of is Roberto Clemente (Thurman Munson too, but he wasn't the same level of superstar).

Clemente died doing something 100% selfless and should be remembered for that.

Kobe is basically Aaliyah 2.0, except that he killed children in instead of just his posse.

Yeah, but Aaliyah was just a rising star, not anywhere near the level of Kobe. She's more like Buddy Holly.

I stand by my Clemente comparison (despite the differing motivations for their air travel).

star power wise yes, but it will soon come out that Kobe insisted on flying in the fog to avoid being late to his marketing opportunity and killed all those people, much like Aaliyah did with her luggage.

Also I was pretty shocked by Brittany Murphy. Her husband dying shortly after was also strange. Pretty sure no one knows - or cares - wtf happened. I am Jewish so I follow basketball but I am also a Film buff so maybe the Actors hit be harder.

Stage Stallone as well. The "guy who is roughly my age dying sudden;y of natural causes for no reason" shit is far more jarring because it is relevant to the Self, which is of critical impotortance to us all, even the, "wow just wow, IDC about celeberity deaths," crowd. "How did he die?" they ask, "was he FAT? Druggie? I hope I do not die irl," basically what everyone says/thinks. Kobe crashing into a mountain like something out of GTA San Andreas is more like, "haha, wow, nigger, I bet he didn't maintain his helicopter like a black guy driving a hoopty Cadillac, or it was flown by some inept hanger-on." He was also a humourous character in recent times, wearing suits and LARPing as a venture capitalist. Basically the whole thing is a joke as far as I'm concerned, analogous to Shaq starring in Kazzam, but for the element of morbidity. Just stating opinions.

Not as big obviously but I have strong memories from when Payne Stewart died. The whole idea of a guy having made it in life and just dying because his plane broke was sad as fuck.

the story about how his wife tried calling his cell phone but he didn't pick up because they were all knocked out has stuck with me to this day. Also that CNN was following as the plane was flying and they had jets flying next to it and there was nothing they could do.
