i mostly did clerical shit, and like watched kids who finished their work who were waiting in the reception area before their parents picked them up. one kid was an AZN in the 6th or 7th grade who was there for SAT stuff. seemed like a nice kid and would talk to me, and id shoot the shit with him, and i asked him once why he liked math so much once and he was like 'it'll help to be an investment banker, to calculate compound interest and stuff'. not flame

That being said, there are two huge back doors. The first of course is affirmative action for URM's. H still gets the best of the best of those groups, but on an objective level, they don't put in as much work as the others to get in.

The second massive, wide-swinging back door, which is less well-known, is athletic recruiting. Sports are actually really important at H, and the admissions office wants to help the coaches field good teams. And H has the most varsity sports of any college in the country. Probably part of the WASP legacy of being a renaissance man who is as successful on the field as he is in the classroom. But today, that noble ethos has been perverted into a bizarre system in which kids who are middling athletes and slightly above average students are ushered into H on a red carpet. The football team is a particularly noticeable example, because of its size and because of its members. These kids often fail to take advantage of, or even appreciate, the many opportunities that H offers, academically and otherwise, but form a large part of the in-crowd on campus due to greater confidence and social skills formed during semi-normal adolescences.

The administration has created some bizarre incentives. But most administrators are so disconnected from the basic realities of modern American life that they don't even notice what is happening in front of them.

Do you agree or disagree with my larger points? I think athletics are great, I wore the DHA's myself. And some athletes obviously did deserve to get into H based on academics. But I also saw some ridiculous examples of people who never would have been anywhere near the Ivies if it weren't for the preferential treatment of athletic recruiting.

The overall acceptance rate at HUG is around 4-5%, but even that number is deceptive. For the class of 2023, the acceptance rate for early action applicants was 13.4%, with roughly half the class being filled by early admits. The reason why the acceptance rate is "high" is because the applicant pool is primarily comprised of athletes and legacies on one hand and superstars on the other. You are not going to waste your early option on Harvard unless you are pretty sure you have a legit shot at getting in. So the early pool is remarkably strong. The regular decision acceptance rate for the class of 2023 was 2.8%. If you are a regular white/Asian kid with no legacy or athlete status and not from an elite high school, the acceptance rate will be far below 2.8%. In many states, you literally see only a handful of those kids get into HUG each year.

it's finally time. with work starting in early July and this board becoming more unhinged and racist, it's time to quit for good. before i go, a couple of posters made requests on threads/issues that they wanted me to touch upon.
