Recruiting for Executive MBA students (Originally Posted: 12/23/2013)
A friend of mine will be starting an Executive MBA program at a top school (Wharton/Columbia/Booth/Kellogg). Due to several personal and professional reasons he's unable to do a full-time MBA.
He has talked extensively with career services and admissions because he actually wants to make a transition post-MBA, ideally investment management or consulting. They told him that although it will be harder to make a switch and although he won't get OCR for internships (he has to take classes during summer anyways), he will have total access to OCR and other resources for full-time jobs (including joining student clubs). Finally, due to his flexible work schedule, he will be able to attend pretty much all the company presentations and networking events during the fall.
Question is this. Obviously everybody knows that an executive program is less selective and prestigious than its full-time counterpart. How much will this hurt my friend during recruiting? Simply put, will the "scarlet label" of the executive program brand him in such a way that he will be unable to get interviews despite his credentials and experience? Or is it simply that he will have to hustle and network harder than the full-timers?

WSO poaster calls him out:
“ Lol, ignore @"mbavsmfin" - he's a closeted student at Columbia's Executive MBA program and is extremely bitter for having been denied by Columbia's Full-Time program numerous times (as well as other "M7" Full-Time programs). He also goes by Brady4MVP. People on the forum mistakenly assume that he goes to Wharton or Booth. Anyways, he has a sad (and masochistic) obsession with denigrating Columbia.”

For those who don't know, executive means you'll be keeping your job and flying in on weekends for classes/using conferencing software/whatever the case is, JJC actually moved to NYC and tried to do clubs and other full time student shit with the regular students

As for dating, a lot of relationships get broken up in b-school. I could go on about this, but basically women at top schools realize that they will never again be in an environment with such a high concentration of smart accomplished alpha men who have their shit together. This inevitably results in them dumping their boyfriends back home and starting fresh. The main problem is that all the guys are targeting the single attractive ones, so you gotta move quickly. And by quickly, I mean by the end of orientation and certainly by the end of the first month of school. If you wait past that, she will be taken, and you would have lost your chance.
My b-school is part of a university with tons of graduate and professional programs. Unfortunately, inter-school mixers are rare, so you really gotta go out there and find your own opportunity (hmmm, sounds a lot like networking and getting a job). From my experience, however, women at these other schools absolutely love MBA guys because they assume that we are successful and will be making a lot of money. The MBAs are also way more social and attractive than say guys from law, med, Phd programs, so that helps as well.

Holy shit, JJC changed it “black November”
Yes, most attractive women came to school already in relationships, and surprisingly most stay attached throughout b-school. The black November phenomenon that is ubiquitous at other b-schools isn't as pervasive here. The single ones got quickly taken within the first few weeks of school. As I said in an earlier post, you have to move fast because there aren't that many attractive single women in b-school, and competition is stiff.
In terms of industry/profession I would say they mostly worked in consulting, general management, advertising, marketing, fashion

More about his friend in the executive program
BGP killed it in this thread. I don't have that much more to add here but a minor correction. A friend just started the executive mba program at columbia, and they actually do get access to OCR for full-time recruiting (not internships) provided that they go through a few painless steps such as meeting with a career service counselor, taking a OCR quiz, doing some paperwork, etc. Of course, the vast majority of EMBA students don't do OCR since they would be taking a demotion and also due to their work schedule they just can't put time into company presentations, networking events, and interviews.

If you're trying to make a transition, part-time is not going to help you. You're right that they can get access to OCR, but most firms don't take them seriously. I know for a fact from talking to friends that the full-timers make fun of the part-timers and look down on them. And employers know that the caliber of students at FT is DRASTICALLY higher than PT. I would say the difference is akin to comparing students at harvard undergrad to ohio state; it really is that vast. Consequently, banks, hedge funds, and IM firms will not give booth part-timers the time of day during recruiting season.
