Holy shit, Walter Cunningham just had the most 180 answer to Cavuto's question

Neil asked him what the biggest difference is between his era of astronauts and today's, and Cunningham went off and said that now it's all about having a woman, a black, etc. instead of the best fighter pilots. Neil was like "......ok, moving on"

True of Mercury, which had no real maneuvering capability (it couldn't change orbits, couldn't dock with anything) and happily existed on autopilot with monkeys on board, but much less true of Gemini and Apollo (Cunningham only flew on Apollo, and it was the first flight--it really was the test-pilot stuff that he describes). To be fair, Wolfe wrote about Mercury.
The difference is that modern spacecraft are much more like Gemini and Apollo in terms of maneuvering capability and sophistication, but computers are also advanced enough to completely replace the human.
(This was close to true for the Space Shuttle as well, but on the Shuttle humans were at least a useful backup in some situations or could fine-tune things. Now it's to the point where human interaction is probably just interference. As we heard during the docking today, close-in to the ISS, the astronauts aren't even allowed to initiate an abort with Dragon--the computer does that if necessary.)

WOW!
Apparently fighter pilots aren't needed for a completely automated flight. How tragic for these Top Gun cadets whose sole accomplishments wind up being escorting Russian communication planes off the coast of Alaska.
