i'm legit worried about this. the school issue is going to be a disaster, then it's going to get cold again and start picking up just in time for the election, which will be insane. then we could have a lame duck trump in office doing absolutely nothing during two months of peak covid. or hell they could both be dead by october, and who the fuck knows what happens? there is no good news for the next six months. it's all either pretty shitty or downright terrifying.

the first few months of COVID were fine because everyone was equally ignorant and scared. now with more facts the country is polarized over it. if it doesn't start killing massive amounts of people, this could turn into a civil war level issue. we need incredible leadership and neither of these guys has it. the governors and mayors are struggling, too. tbf, it's an impossible situation politically.

I work in bigtech - what's happening in our company seems pretty common across several others where i have friend / family.

90% of company WFH until January 2021, then phased re-openings of various sites, with strict guidelines on social distancing temp checks etc for the ones going back over this fall. 1/21 we'll have a ton of flexibility for our work schedule - they'll likely do some phased mixture of bringing people back, but they're going site by site now redesigning the offices, meeting rooms etc. But it sounds like we'll have tons of flexibility for a while.

A big surprise is how well we've done WFH - I think it surprised a ton of higher ups not just in tech but across corporate america at how efficient everything has been under wfh, making the need to get back even less urgent and unnecessary risk for time being....

CR. It's the first mover advantage sticking the spouse with all the childcare when schools end up only being in person one day a week or whatever that will push people back into the office. Not bc they can't do their jobs well enough wfh, but because they are so sick of their spouse and kids that they have to get out of the house.

Very likely.

The coronavirus crisis nationwide is not only deepening, it is growing more deadly. The country's three biggest states — California, Florida and Texas — are reporting their largest single-day death tolls since the pandemic began.

WFH through end of 2020 for sure. Most employees have kids in school that will be on hybrid schedules so likely partial WFH through at least spring of 2021.

Personally I can do this forever, as long as schools open at least partially.
