They're fine but there's no reason to be there. I escaped a while ago, but talk regularly to people in both. The problem is that all of the "benefits" of MFH or SF are still closed (no real restaurants, no shows, etc.), so you're just paying a ton to live in a high-rise in a shut-down city, and paying high taxes to boot.

DC and Chicago are like this too. Meanwhile in my tertiary city indoor restaurants, bars, swimming pools and gyms are open. We have barely had any BLM bullshit and no one is threatening the cops.

In my flyover state big-city, we have restaurants and limited bars open, I'm not sure about public swimming pools but the one in my condo complex is open.

We've had an absolute ton of BLM/police protests, but no property damage and no major issues (one or two shootings and fights, but that's what happens when you get a bunch of people together, and nothing widespread, no worse than the parking lot of a Bills game) (I do not live in Buffalo). Most cops are 100% on-board and (potentially) as a result the protesters are very much playing by the rules.

I'm sorry about all the violence. I think what helps in my city is that racial tensions are very low among locals.

Depending on the neighborhood, NYC is very livable rn. Tons of outdoor dining, suspended open container laws, retail is open, several pools (hotel rooftop and community) are open, parks are open, etc. It's also nicer now because it isn't crowded -- no tourists and no midtown + fidi crowds because offices are closed and tons of people left. If you can afford it, it's not bad at all.

Midtown, fidi, hudson yards (i.e., mostly office areas) are ghost towns and weird, but mostly residential neighborhoods are fine.

It's the "if you can afford it" part that's key, though. Sure, if you have the money to throw around, it's very much livable, but there's just no reason to be there at the moment.

In my flyover kid is going back to school full time, 5-days a week. None of this e-learning nonsense. If we had stayed in the Bay Area, libs would have sacrificed his next semester to the iPad gods.
