It can be time consuming if you play it a lot. I find that I most enjoy playing 9 holes with friends in the late afternoon then hitting the bar. That only takes a couple of hours plus drinking time. A full 18 holes at a busy course can take up most of a day.
You do need to play a fair amount in order not to suck so badly that it becomes a drag to play, especially in the beginning. I didn't start playing until I was 40, and the first 5 years I played were misery, but eventually I got to the point where it wasn't a total embarrassment. When I play 2-3x/ week I show improvement, but I rarely do that. When I play 1x/week I stay the same. Casual golfers are highly variable, and there are great holes/horrible holes/great rounds/horrible rounds. |

As far as time consuming, yes absolutely. 18 holes of golf feels like a fucking eternity. After about 6 holes I am ready to call it quits. I like hanging out with friends outdoors and having a couple beers, but I'd rather play a sport like basketball, soccer or tennis and then have a few drinks. |
