I bought several games in the 90s and remember calculating the exact fuckin' amount I needed with sales tax and everything was under $60 pre-tax other than some weird price-gouging situations plus Chrono Trigger.

The price of video games has barely changed over the years.

They were $60-65 in 1996, 2000, 2006, and 2016.

This is just about the credited response imo.

MGS1 and GTA are the most recent ones here and are the only ones not here basically because of graphics. The closest thing to mindblowing after N64 was the Dreamcast.

remember playing it first at a friends sleepover. i was pretty impressed with the open world and do whatever you want mentality of the game. and the graphics were pretty smooth and interesting as well.

he also introduced me to tupac, wu tang clan, and Stephen King. i was exposed to some good stuff that weekend. i was 13, btw.

oh yeah, he also tried to get me to smoke weed but i wouldnt. only tried it again seriously at 18 again and then at 21 i took off with it hard.

I was late to the game with PS2, and I bought it almost only to play GTA 3 on it. Of course I bought a lot of others after that.

But just running from the cops and getting up in star wanted levels was peak experience. I wasted dozens of hours on that probably.

As far as games where I was like "wow, this is different":

SM64, Goldeneye, Zelda OoT. Basically the really good N64 games.

Even though it didn't have the 3D wow factor, I'd probably add Super Metroid just because I remember it being so badass as a kid. Felt a lot different than anything that had come out on SNES.

For pure multi-player fun, Halo. There had just not been anything like it on console before.

How many of the people poasting ITT were still impressionable kids when they played these games though? That should factor in somewhat. Not saying the games weren't revolutionary, but maybe the scale of it wouldn't have seem as pronounced to someone who was already grown and had watched games evolve.

Witcher III was hugely hyped and still blew my tits off.

I remember being 13 at a Best Buy once. I went to the computers, force quit the video tutorial (an action that I was sure was going to get the salespeople to boot me out of the area) and fired up Descent. All the Packard Bells at the time came with a shareware version of the game and had the first seven levels.

I had a crowd of like a dozen people that stopped to watch me play. It was crazy

The original COD modern warfare. That gillie suit level in prypyat is still greatest FPS campaign level ever.

Everything, especially the way it just DRIPPED with atmosphere in a way that no game outside of Deus Ex or VtM:B ever has. The writing is top-tier, it's hilarious, sad, affecting, addictive, and fun.

Still think about it all the time months later, and will likely replay soon with an intelligence build (first playthrough I pumped psyche and dumped intelligence)

Not a game, but my first brush with VR was absolutely mindblowing. I was overwhelmed by how immersive it was.

The first killer app on VR will change everything.

i rode one of those VR roller coasters in the mall and it felt incredibly realistic aside from the terrible graphics. when they make a legit VR racing game with a motorcycle or car simulator it will be the best game ever.

Imagine if there were a WoW equivalent. If it weren't for sex with 30-year-old white shrews in steep sexual market value decline, there would be no reason to live IRL.

10/10 on IGN and many others https://www.ign.com/games/half-life-alyx

I would say that the Walking Dead Saints and Sinners VR game blew my mind wide open

This was one of the first online multiplayer shooters I remember playing in like 2000. Unbelievably fun.

To anyone saying Skyrim: Lol no.

Morrowind was the game changer. This was back when your action in a game could actually completely fuck you over to the point you can't finish the game (i.e. killing a required NPC). It didn't have any of this bullshit hand holding nonsense you see in every game today.

Don't get me wrong, Skyrim had beautiful landscapes and enemy NPCs. The game just had no soul. It was extremely boring. And normally I'd give it a pass because mods can fix a lot of things, but not when it is this bad. Nothing in Skyrim actually mattered.

Mario 64 and MGS2 -- OP is correct

everything else was sort of derivative from that

those two games represented the real 'next gen' shift in gaming

MGS2 came out at the same time as a bunch of other games that struck that next-gen chord like FFX plus stuff like Devil May Cry, Onimusha, not to mention GTA3.
