you're moving the goalpost. original proposition was that sweden's policies were effective at curbing the spread and impact of covid as compared to other policies. why then are sweden's covid numbers so much worse than their two neighbors with similar culture/population that adopted different policies. after we establish whether or not sweden's policies are actually effective we can move on to the cost-benefit of those policies vs relative restrictiveness.

Sweden "front-loaded" their deaths by taking a more lax approach. The problem with this approach is that we've gotten much better at treating COVID and recognizing outbreaks. We've likely reduced the death rate by at least 50% and we're much better at testing so when people get the virus they won't spread it like they did in March. So even with the spikes in other euro countries now, Sweden will remain at the top of the heap by fatality rate. This is especially true given that we'll have a vaccine by next year.

We should definitely be more open to other approaches, but I think this board has a tendency to overrate Sweden's approach because of its desire to defend trump at all costs. And Sweden suffered economically anyway.

We've definitely reduced the fatality rate. And likely significantly. Simple treatment protocols alone have made a huge difference. Your boy Trump is right on this one. And we'll definitely have a vaccine. The virus is not as elusive as the various strains of the flu.

We don't have vaccines for cold viruses because there is absolutely no reason to develop vaccines for the many different viruses that cause the common cold.

Note that Sweden purposely gave every covid patient above a certain age morphine and refused to admit them into ICUs. Mainly because the objectively retarded imperial college model that good (stupid) New York Times readers still take seriously anticipated a catastrophic influx of covid patients. Surprise, surprise: the model was wrong, per usual.

If anything Neil Ferguson’s model not only panicked western governments into closing everything, but probably also helped drive up Sweden’s deaths far more than necessary.

At the end of the day, people in your camp shrieked at Sweden in April while hysterically waving around “science” like this: https://i.imgur.com/t7Hc8UK.jpg

Sweden responded by calmly inviting you to go find a large horse to felate. Now it’s in a far more robust position to withstand a prolonged pandemic than its neighbors. And their people did not waste precious months indoors wallowing for no reason. Given all the shrieking about exponential growth, I might’ve guessed that the Swedes would all be dead by now given their initial rate of spread

I didn't shriek at all. In fact I praised sweden for taking an alternative approach that was backed by a legitimate scientific position. I agree that the media was too harsh and skeptical of the Swedish approach. I hate groupthink. But ultimately, I don't think the Swedish approach has been vindicated at all. I set out my reasons above and I don't think people on this board disagree. We're much better at treating this now and closer to a vaccine. So those who argued for lockdowns to buy us time to figure out what to do may end up being vindicated with lower fatality rates.

Also, forgotten in all this is that if covid behaves like other coronaviruses, immunity will wane within a year and people will soon be susceptible again. The jury is out on the severity of a second bout.
