In this case that's what he wants to do, because he wants to temporarily sell his stocks while at the same time he doesn't want to realize the capital gains he's accrued. Shorting a highly correlated asset you don't own is how you sell something you own without actually selling it.
If he sells calls on his holdings and they get exercised he will be forced to realize the capital gains on them. He also hasn't obtained any downside protection besides a small options premium (less fees). |
