I think she said 100K was the upper limit but that it's 120K for adult fiction. Most of the books that win awards in adult are 150-200K though. Readers don't really care about word count. Publishers do.
What they don't tell you is that the first book is basically an exam. You get a narrow word count band, limited creative control, and you get the same shitty marketing package every other book gets. If you sell 5000, which still sucks, you're considered to have passed. If you sell less than 1000, you fail. In between and your agent still has to push you but you're not dead.
Letting people push the word counts makes it harder for publishers to compare first books. |

Even though the romance plots are only about 2% of the book, it has an LGBT protagonist. The market likes boy-girl. It's politically polarizing because the bad guys are capitalist Nazis. It's slightly slower paced than I would have liked, because it's literary, although I don't know what he should do about that. It picks up after the inciting incident, and all the early stuff does have to be there.
I could see it selling a million copies, though not in its first year. It wouldn't seem undeserved. I could also see it falling between two genres and failing, because it's a fantasy written in literary style, and not everyone is Le Guin, PKD, or Atwood. |

Also with a series, the first book has to be really good or the whole thing just dies, because it's the first book that it becomes known by, e.g., Game of Thrones.
In his book, there are things in the first 150 pages that look like plot holes or deus ex machina but pull through at the end of the story. Splitting a book often means worse reviews for the first book and few people buying sequels. That's exactly what traditional publishers ask people to do with long books, because it makes more money, but it's often a bad idea. |

The love interest is an interesting character, if a little bit of a stereotype. None of his characters are "normal humans" though, because no one who ends up in a fantasy plot is normal.
I think he understands book characters a lot better than real people. I don't think he has a good understanding of the general public and that's why I think Harry Potter level success is extremely unlikely. |
