JJ, Khabib and GSP have never been dominated the way Anderson was dominated by Chael (until he sunk the triangle in). Fact is, the American Gangster was winning that fight.

Anderson Silva was the beginning of the end of the relatable UFC. He marked the end of the UFC being an amateur sport of upper class, well educated professionals to being a professionalized sport that encompasses the practitioners’ entire lives from childhood to retirement. People forget that at one point, the UFC was one of the most well educated sports in the world, with most fighters having college degrees. In the early 2000s, there were more athletes with professional degrees in the UFC than in any other major sport (“major sport” being a debatable term). It was a hobby sport done in people’s free time until they were big enough to do it full time. Silva won his middleweight title by beating Rich Franklin, a middle school chemistry teacher.

He was fun to watch, don’t get me wrong, but he was always a roided-up diva who looked good because he was fighting against former white collar career track types with chips on their shoulders.

He was also a very mediocre fighter until he got to the UFC, where more stringent drug tests put his American competitors at a disadvantage while he disappeared to Curitiba for months at a time doing god knows what PEDs.

Ljl he wasn't nearly as juiced as most guys today are.

PEDs don't give you that head movement.

Traps have a particularly high density of androgen receptors, so roiding will help head movement. The dudes today are roided to the gills, don’t get me wrong, but so was Silva. The guy has failed at least 2 drug tests that I can recall, possibly more.

But the point wasn’t about the steroids. It was that he marked the end of the era when an ex-college wrestler who was tired of his sales job would go to some fight club in the evenings and eventually become a world champion. Now people are training for it before they have hit puberty. The accessibility factor of the sport is gone.

LMAO ik how roiding and receptors work. I also think Silva didn't have the mass for that to make nearly as much of a difference as his hand and head speed.

I think that the upside of higher skill level is absolutely worth any loss of accessibility.

The skill level is way lower now. It used to attract high talent, high potential people who were fighting because they had a chip on their shoulder. Today we get the Khabibs and McGregors and others who have become the best of those who are low talent enough to make the gamble worth it or have no place better to be.

You dumb fuck, if UFC is casting a wider talent pool and people are training from birth, of course the talent is better

If I thought you were right I'd concede (as I have various times on XO). What I know is that you're quite dumb.

What the fuck do you think differentiates between two fighters that have trained a long time?

NATIVE ABILITY OR APTITUDE

You've missed the point of my argument, which is that people with high potential have an opportunity cost to fighting in the UFC. As the amount of training required increases, so does the opportunity cost. As a result, the Share Carwins and Rich Franklins (or David Beneteau, who was never good but was a lawyer) are gone.

Disagree. His head movement isn't nearly as good, which was foundational for Silva.

He's a great striker though. I picked Costa in that fight and was decisively wrong, so I'm more of a believer in him now.
