I'm always mind fucked how often otherwise "smart" people incorrectly assume they have to liquidate their retirement assets / securities or need to move to "safe" securities right at the start of retirement and thus worry about the market tanking right before retirement or sometime before the very end.

You have 15-30 years you can slowly sell whatevers assets / securities you have for retirement. No need to liquidate or move to safer investments when you get close to retirement or at the start of retirement. Risk of a crash is mitigated by the time scale involved. Makes sense when you're closer to death though if you barely have enough money though

I am continually MINDFUCKED at how many otherwise "smart" people don't realize this.

Cr. Assuming you're pulling in at least 300k / year working until you die, $800k would suffice.

Sequence risk is the danger that the timing of withdrawals from a retirement account will have a negative impact on the overall rate of return available to the investor. This can have a significant impact on a retiree who depends on the income from a lifetime of investing and is no longer contributing new capital that could offset losses. Sequence risk is also called sequence-of-returns risk.

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/sequence-risk.asp

Level risk depends on length of retirement, what % you have in cash / treasuries, etc.

these "calculators" all assume a 30 year run, oh yeah I'm going to reorient my life around not running out of money at *95* years old what an insane goal

its all smoke & mirrors to scare you and get you to invest more $$$ with them than you actually need

Equally dumb to not realize a lot of these people are transitioning their portfolios to mostly cash equivalents and bonds, even if they are not cashing out entirely to their checking accounts.

Yeah. My point is that it's a falacy that it's smart to move to cash equivalent and bonds right before or at the start of retirement.

Financial planners recommend this because it leads to more commissions for them. Not because it makes sense.
