Cars depreciate most in the first few years. Leasing and taking the massive depreciation hit yourself is the dumbest move imaginable.

Guy chasing kopecks. Its an efficient market. Cars that "age well" dont depreciate much and you arent saving much money over leasing or buying new. 4Runners, Rav4s, GX460s, Civics, CR-Vs, Camry's etc...good luck getting a deal on a used one that saves you much over just leasing. Shitty Nissans that implode on you are cheap used but there is a good reason for that.

I enjoy driving as many miles as I would like and not providing free tint and clear-bra services to the financing company. It is also nice to not have a payment for 2-3 years before I buy a new car. I also find that cars are most enjoyable once you've gotten to know them past 36k miles.

GX460's depreciate quite a bit off of MSRP. What's not noticed, however, is how much incentive Lexus lays on their cars to move prior model years out. If you ignore their "December to Remember" and buy in January you can walk out with a great deal.

2015 is 33k. Its 50-52k new. That's ~ 40% depreciation in 5 years. Makes more sense to lease with numbers like that or if you are still saving by buying used (cheaper insurance) its not like you are saving THAT much. It's kopecks.

Oh, what a difference. With this math you save all of 10% by buying used over leasing. $6k spread over another +/- 7-8 years of the life of the car. Oh, what a savings and mind you that savings is hardly guaranteed as there's a non-zero risk of buying a fucked up lemon.

Because if you're smart, you find cars that are model year depreciated, not mileage depreciated. So, that 3yr old car w/ 10-15k miles on it.

There are very few cars I'd be new. Things like Tacomas, Jeep Rubicons, certain Subarus if you live in the NW or PacNW; basically shit that doesn't depreciate enough where buying used makes sense.

However, most cars can be purchased 2-3yrs "used" in a model year sense with next to no mileage on them. I'm more than happy to save 20-30% on something that has barely been driven.

30% of MSRP would probably be a good deal for most cars. After three years most cars have lost more than half their value.

IIRC most have a residual value around 60% of MSRP after a 3 year lease runs out. Very few would be under 50%.

Every Car thread gets 500 replies jfc who cares

In some states you don't pay sales tax on a lease iirc (or you only pay on the value of the Car that you lease, not the residual), which seems shrewd. Why pay sales tax on like $50k that you're not getting back if you plan to trade the vehicle in.

Also, the prospect of owning, say, a German car without having to deal with the finicky crap that happens with age.

Also, when you lease, the deal is done right then and there. If you plan to buy and then trade-in in a few years, it's just an opportunity for a dealer to hustle you down the line, e.g. giving you 110% of fair market value and then just inflating the price of the car you're buying, or just lowballing you.

ALSO, with WFH, but still needing a car now and then, if you drive ridiculously few miles, you can get a good deal on a lease afaik.

That's the problem -- it's not front loaded anymore with Toyotas and shit. It's only front loaded on luxury cars and certain shit makes. A year old or 2 year old Camry has depreciated by like 1/5th which if you assume a 10-12 year life for the thing is pretty fucking linear.

a) You're leasing a BMW X5, not a Toyota.

b) Toyotas are still much better to buy because you really can run them for 20+ years with zero problems. If you price out 6 3 year leases vs. just buying the car and holding for 18 years then you will massively lose.

I don't like car leases bc 1) it's only new cars and you're blowing money if you buy or lease a new car; and 2) you lose optionality. At least with buying you can sell if things change (and buying out a lease sounds complicated and expensive)

Ty, interesting. Shrewd friends of mine lease (one guy with an infiniti, costs nothing bc it doesn't depreciate; another guy w a BMW 4 series bc he "can't be bothered" to deal w ownership). So I'm not trying to disparage the choice at all. For me, the cr response is still going to be a ~5-10 year old car purchase for reasons of flexibility and cost. But I understand other people want a newer car, and in that case, I do agree that it's a horse apiece w buying vs leasing, especially when you factor in time value of money and investing with the cash flow you're freeing up by leasing instead of buying.

Lease vs buy is just another financial decision. I tend to buy highly reliable cars that have taken most of their depreciation hit and lease cars where I’ve gotten stupid deals. I’ve come out with crazy negative equity on all but one lease (which was a “hot” luxury car that I leased cheaply used and it just retained most of its value), which I think is generally what you want.

It’s undoubtedly retarded to lease an X5 for $1100/month, which I think is what most leases are these days...

Buying the X5 is more insane. That's a purely luxury consumption play regardless of lease v. own. The real problem is with the the internet the market for used cars has just become crazy efficient and with that efficiency the delta between leasing and buying used has shrunk to where it hardly matters.

Totally agree. As an illustration, even the lease where I had positive equity returned cash at the end because the dealer knew he could flip it for a profit and bought me out of the contract so an already sick deal ended with a modest windfall.

I think the clear winning strategy is to buy a used Toyota and drive it for 10 years but if you want new cars these days you might be better off leasing.

I used it correctly. Delta is variance or, as you said, change in a variable and the variable is car X and the variance is between its lease v. buy state -- that's a delta.

I promise that if you price out buying it at a decent discount off of MSRP (totally doable) and holding for 9 years vs. leasing 3 cars for 3 years each that you'll save considerably with the first strategy.

To make it easy, let's agree that a lease involves paying 30% of a car's MSRP for 3 years. We'll use $100k for the car price to make easy numbers. Cost of lease is $90k in that scenario.

Assume that at the end of year 9 the car is worth about 30%. Car cost is $100k - 30k = $70k. In other words, you saved 20% of the value of the car or $20k. That's real money.

I'm ignoring both repairs and mileage overages, as well as the fact that dealers try to fuck you on return condition. I'm also ignoring that it is easier to get a good discount off of MSRP buying rather than leasing.

And Im saying that saving is more like 10% with repairs and the fact that if you buy a good Japanese car the depreciation is NOT particularly front loaded anymore and 10% over 6-7 year of ownership is basically nothing so you are chasing kopecks and not dollars.

LMAO, you seriously got hired at a bank to provide advice?

I explicitly addressed the repair side. Over 9 years you probably won't have significant repairs, but whatever repairs you have will be cancelled out by comparing other shit on the lease side. In fact, the shit I listed for the lease will probably cost more.

If you want to talk about a Toyota then you need to compare 6 3 year leases vs buying once and holding over 18 years. Take a wild guess at what that will look like.

Like someone said below, you didn't outsmart the silly goys at Toyota or BMW. They're multi-billion dollar companies and you're a dumbfuck compliance officer at a bank.

Never claimed you outsmarted anyone. It's quit the opposite -- the market for used cars just got too efficient to the point where you cant outsmart anyone.

The Toyota that runs for 18-20 years is mostly flame and assumes perfect storage, perfect weather, proper preventative maintenance. They mostly dont exist, bro. Cars in the North East and Mid West still rust. If you are buying a Corolla thinking you will drive it for 20 years you are insane.

How can you compare an 18 year old car to a new one every three years? The proper comparison would be selling every three years and buying new, or at least some adjustment for those who don't want to drive an 18 year old Toyota.

I can compare it because that's the alternative choice. If I lease then I'm going to return it and get a new lease every 3 years because that's what a lease is. If I buy then I'm not going to sell it in 3 years, because that would be a dumbass thing to do. The latter is significantly cheaper. If you're driving a Corolla anyway then it really doesn't matter if it is "new" or 10 years old.

If I lease it, I can't customize it myself afterwards, right? No spoilers or decals?

Like Wilbur, all 3 of my vehicles are 12+ years old. The past two weeks I've had my first major repair bill of my life. Haven't made a "car payment" in 14+ years.

leasing makes sense under one of two conditions

1. you hardly every drive (and even then uber might be better)

2. you are retarded

3. You want a new car every three years or do not know if you’ll need a car after three years.

Wanting a new car every 3 years and being willing to pay for it is covered by 2.

I'm not saying you have to buy a shitty car. But people that pretend that the BMW 3 series the striver lawyer is buying today is MUCH better than a 3 series from 5 years ago is kidding himself. I know plenty of boomers that buy a new car every 2-3 years. They don't know what half the buttons in their cars do. They're always talking about "their new car." It is pure conspicuous consumption.

I agree with that. For the past decade+ I’ve owned a single very practical car that I bought used and leased a second car. The second car has changed based on my needs and I often hope I won’t need a second car at all. It’s made a ton of sense for me to lease. I also don’t drive the second car much so might be covered by 1.

Low mileage leases are cheaper. You can price a low mileage lease to be less than buying.

If you actually drive that little, screw it, just buy a Honda Civic and hold it for 15 years. Cheaper than a lease and you don't drive enough to justify luxury.

Or you can buy a cool old Porsche 911 or Toyota Landcruiser or something. It'll last forever in that scenario. Like literally decades.

Saving 40% by expensing lease payments is always CR.

Also it is nice to always have a relatively new car - selling cars is a pain in the ass.

If you have a business and can expense it then obviously that's a different game.
