Just caught a rat in a glue trap. He was firmly stuck and obviously looked uncomfortable. But does the pain of a rat count like pain does for a human? Or a dog? One time I saw a sous chef chop a lobster in half with a very sharp knife. The lobster was still moving quite a bit and he explained that lobsters don't experience pain like we do, they only know something's wrong. How are rats on this scale?

Lobsters have weird distributed nervous systems, in some sense they really are sea bugs. I feel really bad for making any mammal suffer, even if it is just a rat. Would feel better about only eating locally farmed meat, but am far too poor and addicted to the luxury of $5 sandwiches.

I tried to free a shrew from a glue trap once. It was screaming really loudly. Unfortunately, I just ripped it in half and it’s guts spilled everywhere.

The Noahide laws address this. Like with all thing -- it's in the Torah, bro. You cant eat flesh ripped from a living animal. The animal should be koshered properly and it needs to be a hoofed animal or clean foul. Boiling lobster aint kosher so dont do it. Dont eat bottom feeders like shrimp.

it seems probable that mammals experience pain in roughly the same way we do. their brains have many of the same parts, same mechanisms of action, just less developed, and they sure as hell behave in ways we can comprehend.
