Median household income is $50k. 80th percentile (top 20%) is $115k. Top 5% starts at $240k. Middle class in LA is basically from $39k to $66k.
This question is basically “how economically segregated is your life?” from the comments. If you’re making $200k and don’t feel rich, it’s because you’re out of touch with the vast majority of Angelenos. Most people in LA are making do with a quarter of what you’ve got, so stop comparing yourself to Kardashians and recognize how lucky you are.

You can live in a good neighborhood, go to any restaurant you want, etc. You’re not getting into elite social institutions (country clubs, private schools, etc.) solely based on money, but you are at least wealthy/successful enough to get in if you otherwise have merit (and enough saved money to finance ongoing costs).
There is a world of difference between this and two teachers who are making $150-180 HHI (in the North East) or an experienced restaurant manager and supply chain manager who make $145K HHI in the Midwest. |

I save 38% of my post tax income on a salary of less than £30k. I live in a 2br apartment in a nice neighbourhood. I achieve this by living in a city which does not have insane rents and does not have all economic growth flow into the pocket of (((landlords))). I do not live like a pauper, in fact I could save even more money if I didn't spend so much on takeout and made my own lunches. I am looking at moving to a new job with salary range: £40k-50k, I will be able to save literally >50% of post-tax income if I maintain equal lifestyle. that is unlikely to happen but 30%-40% will be easily doable long term.
to be clear I do not consider myself even middle class. I am one step above poor. but the fact that I am debt free (apart from student loans, which are not functionally debt in this country) and saving so much money gives a tremendous feeling of security. I don't have a lot of money, but I also do not worry about the lack of it, and I do not worry about losing my job because I can last for a very long time on savings. I think this psychological effect is an important aspect that goes under discussed in class comparisons. if you are making large salary but are terrified of losing job you are still in a sense poor. only independently wealthy people are rich in my view. |
