It really is. Just by random chance I came across this pic of Thom Yorke in 98 at some music festival:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thom_Yorke#/media/File:Thom_Yorke_1998.jpg

He must have felt like the king of the fucking world. He was 30 years old and a global rock star. He had everything -- fame, artistic acclaim, wealth, renown; he was living what is literally a poaster-on-the-wall dream for kids growing up.

Fast forward to 2013 and he looks like fucking this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thom_Yorke#/media/File:Melt_Festival_2013_-_Atoms_For_Peace-6.jpg

He's 45 in that picture but looks like he's going on 60 and then 80 and then it's over. And it doesn't matter how much money you have in your bank account man, rock in a young man's game in a certain hard to describe way and you're never going to get that back. Fuck.

There are many, many spheres where it's totally natural being in middle or even old age and being considered high aptitude and perfectly suited -- literature, science, law, philosophy &c Rock is one of those things though that really seems to be meant for a youthful spirit and seeing someone age through it is therefore particularly painful because it highlights the impermanence of the human experience in a way that something like a career in the literary arts ("he could write his great work at 82!") doesn't.

tyft, and you're of course correct. probably one reason why they are put out of sight out of mind is because this truth is too uncomfortable for people. even if their music stays good and relevant, it's just too painful to look at.

He didn't have to cultivate it he just was it, whether he wanted to be or not. Mike Stipe has had the soul of an 80 year old since he was 20. Plenty of rockstars haven't cultivated being rockstars. This isn't about tension between image and reality (look at that aging rocker thinking he's still 25!) it's about the unavoidable movement of time in a sphere that magnifies a hundred fold all the beautiful and painful aspects of youth

there are so many good examples of faded rockstars that look like absolute parodies of themselves it just seems really odd to go to thom yorke, who looked like a total dork when he was young and who's current look probably fits the mold of a brooding artsy rocker way more than ever before, as the prime example

As I said, I just happened to stumble across him I wasn't singling him out. But as I also said -- and by the way, this is why lawyers are fucking scum because they obsess over some autistic triviality and run the point into the ground, but here we are -- I find someone like Yorke who never was trying to cultivate the image to drive the issue home that much more because it's a case of "even when you're not seeking it" i.e., he never sought to be a youthful rock God and yet here he is now middle-aged and haggard looking, there's no comeuppance to his trajectory just the uncaring accretion of time man.

He didn't look like a husk in 99, he looked like a 30 year old man in his prime enjoying rock God status his protestations to the contrary notwithstanding. Also we seem to be having a perfectly non-banal back-and-forth right now about the relevance of image to the perception of age in the medium of rock, so there's that. Chill my friend.

It's quite sad we've gotten this far off the plot of the OP but it's a sub-thread so why the fuck not! People seem to be transposing what Thom has morphed into over the past 20 years with what he looked like in the 90s, which is pretty fucking cool. He wasn't the hunchback outcast you're making him out to be.

Not clicking a Facebook link but https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/rs-157377-20121218-thom-yorke-624x420-1355850351.jpg?resize=940,705&w=940

Anyways, I agree with your point and also hate seeing this too. Axl was a god to me growing up. I’m just saying it was a bad example.

You really should click the FB link because he looks great in it. And guess agree to disagree because I stand by my point that if you think it through someone like Yorke suffering this is a more powerful, subtle example than picking some rock brodude who still acts like he's 25 at 65

To be fair,

Lawyers are scum (I agree btw) because you picked a particularly horrible example to make your brilliant point that aging sucks and that it's jarring to see an old man operating within a field that fundamentally prizes and celebrates youth (I agree btw), and now your poor choice is sidetracking people from simply agreeing with your point which they would otherwise probably have done because it's a pretty obviously true observation to make?

And this somehow makes lawyers scum (I agree btw), rather than just making you a fucking retard who took a fundamentally solid and uncontroversial point and made it unnecessarily confusing by picking a horrible illustrative example when there are literally a million much better examples that jump to mind? And now you're also pretty mad about it on the internet so you're gonna argue with some people you don't know and call them mean names to show them that they are stupid and you are angry?

Say... do you happen to post under a "punctuation moniker" on "AutoAdmit.com", by chance?

I get what the OP is saying now, his complaint is with aging itself, which, yeah duh. I thought he meant the Vince Neil kind of aged rock star with a plastic surgery disaster face.

You're continuing to fail to track the point. It's not simply about the inevitability of aging it's about the experience of aging in the particular crucible of music and within music rock, because of its orientation toward youth and the contrast between the heady heights you can experience as a "young guy" while the prospect of time fucking you up is just around the corner.

It's okay! You're displaying great traits of persistence for no purpose, passive aggression, and snideness in this discussion which started off on a nice footing! You're doing great, feminine punctuation usage and all! I can certainly ape this tact and be a fag with you too! I'm reminded of the truism of the difference between a town with one vs. two lawyers! Really enjoyed this sub-thread and reminder of the sort of people who practice in our profession!

Thom Yorke looks fine. He looked like he did in the first picture for like a year. He also has some kind of dead eye and was beaten to a pulp like 20 years ago. Has a full head of hair. Most likely doesn’t even try to put himself together anymore.

Just jumping in to my own poast to request 5 more responses about how Thom Yorke actually was still quite a catch at 45 and why, my cousin Lucy, she's 38 and lives in NY and hasn't quite found the right guy to marry, she'd love to find a Thom Yorke to give her a baby or two still if they could do it safely oh she's been through a lot of relationships, a *lot*, but she just hasn't found Mr. Right thanks

Yeah and I feel like that was more to the point OYT is making which is you can also look like a fucking fool / tool in rock when you're trying to act like you're a 26 year old but you have the aged weathered body now of a 62 year old boomer. The Yorke example up top is almost more painful tho because to OYT's point he never was trying to be that 26 year old rock god but he just happened to be it because he was it, if that makes sense, but regardless of his lack of intention time passed him by too and there he is aged and weathered too up on stage at 50 twenty years after his golden hour.

I think Cobain was acutely aware of this and it was probably one (of several) factors that motivated his suicide or at least convinced him that it was a great idea when he was in his altered state. He wrote about exactly this phenomenon in his suicide note and it must have been persistently on his mind to manifest at that moment just before he opted to take his own life. Ironically, from a legacy perspective, there's some validity to the line of thinking--sort of like what we're talking about up-thread re the Beatles breaking up when they did.

The physical aging isn’t the worst. It’s seeing them sell out and make a mockery of you and everything they represented when you thought they were cool and stood for something other than making money.

It’s seeing Green Day become fanboys of the Democratic Party, or Rage Against the Machine requiring proof of COVID vaccination at their arena tour.

Few of them learn how to dress. Most aged "rockers" still kind of dress with leather pants, leather vests, pirate shirts, rings and bandanas and shit. Aerosmith, Keith Richards, etc.

The pre-tattoo era guys all got covered in tattoos, like Metallica.

Or they cultivate some "weird" thing, like Sting with extra long sleeves and huge neck holed sweaters. Or bono with weird sunglasses.

They have money and leisure, there is no reason they cannot learn to dress like a 65 year old.
