from A History of Rock and Roll in 500 Songs:

Berry had always been interested in playing as many different styles of music as he could — he was someone who was trying to incorporate the sounds of Louis Jordan, Muddy Waters, Charlie Christian, and Nat “King” Cole, among others. And so as well as performing blues, jazz, and rhythm and blues music, he’d also incorporated a fair amount of country and western music in his shows. And in particular, he was an admirer of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, and he would perform their song “Ida Red” in shows, where it always went down well.

[explains how Berry turned the Western Swing classic, Ida Red, into Maybelline]

And Berry’s music did resemble the Memphis rockabilly more than it resembled anything else. Both had electric lead guitars, double bass, drums, and reverb, and no saxophone and little piano. Both sang sped-up hillbilly boogies with a hard backbeat. Rock and roll was, as we have seen, a disparate genre at first, and people would continue to pull from a whole variety of different sources. But working independently and with no knowledge of each other, a white country hick from Tennessee and a sophisticated black urbanite from the Midwest had hit upon almost exactly the same formula, and Berry was going to make sure that he made the connection as clear as possible.

Chuck Berry's "Promised Land," later covered by Elvis and the Grateful Dead, was just new lyrics on the country music classic, "Wabash Cannonball."

mix of rhythm and blues (i.e. black music— or race music as it used to be called), pop (stuff like Frank Sinatra, Patti Page), and country and western (aka rural music). All of this, particularly race and rural music was lower class. Rock and roll was really class music. Revenge of the proles. neglecting the very large contribution of blacks is as dumb as neglecting the contribution of whites (mostly poor)

cr. There are only three original rock and roll acts:

1. Little Richard

2. Jerry Lee Lewis

3. Elvis Presley

These are the bare bones trio that defined the genre. That's what you have to work with.

All three had one thing in common: poor as fuck southern church doods. Southern churches probably had a tradition of people doing these kinds of antics stretching back to the reconstruction era, maybe even earlier for the negroes. It just wasn't until the 1950s that that Sam Phillips came along and started making recordings. If you read about Sam Phillips he was a weird dude. Sort of a shut-in loner music dork, probably autistic, who seemed to find his outlet through music he heard during the great depression.

Guitar was considered a shitty, low class instrument in England. American slaves got ahold of them because they were cheap and easier to acquire than other instruments. That's why all these old english rock guitarists talk about busting their ass for years to get one damn Fender

actually Jews created rock and roll by stealing black music. blacks created Jazz and Blues, Blues being the precursor to Rock. not much debate to be had there.

jews created rap that is true. But they had little to no influence on rock and roll beside shady record deals.

they were cultivating the artists and responsible for the entire marketing and public relations that turned "rock and roll" (slang for sex) into a concept that could be understood by the American public. early rock was literally nothing more than 2nd rate blues, unlike blues and jazz there is no harmonic innovation in rock. rock was invented to market Blues to white ppl. it is a jewish invention as much as rap is.

typical jew, weasle in to something the white man created and try to claim ownership. Its ridiculous and the usual jew envy reeks like an outhouse, but I do admire the flagrant way you people go about it.

this claim is made for the same reasons as Out of Africa Theory. it makes people feel good to say blacks were essential in some way to humanity and the arts. hot tip - they aren't.

Wow we have people who deny OOA. On this board.

Not sure whether that or denying that blavks have played a huge role in American artistic culture is more kooky. Yeah buddy Michael Jackson wasn't "essentual" to the develop of popular music, the music video as an art form, the album as a concept, the modern concert tour, etc.

'rock' music is definitionally white.

'rock' isn't rock unless a white guy is singing it. it's something in the grain of the voice that makes Elvis' version of a standard R&B or C&W song suddenly a 'Rock' song when he sings it. as soon as white people started playing rhythm music, it became something different by virtue of the white influence.

Rock music and whiteness are indivisible. the element that white people brought to rhythm music is ironic detachment -- which set it on its path of elaborate experimentation and cerebreality (Bo Diddley vs Sgt. Pepper), but also made it less immediately earnest and 'soulful' than black music.

Of course they did.

The origins are covered above ITT but what is accepted as the first bona fide rock and roll song (by most music critics and scholars) was a song called "Rocket 88" by One Turner (yes, of beating-the-shit-out-of-Tina-Turner fame).

STFU. I explained already why you are wrong. You are as retarded as the fag who pointed to a Beach Boys song as proof that blacks "invented" rock & roll. This isn't science you jackass. You can't point to one song and say, "This is it! This is when rock & roll was invented."

It was a process, an amalgam.

the podcast "A History of Rock and Roll in 500 Songs" does a pretty good job, as far as i'm concerned, in showing why Rocket 88 is the first r-n-r song only on an arbitrary basis.

You are not addressing my point. Dipshit cultural critics can point to a song and say, "First Rock and Roll song" -- OK, fine, but it is not like the first time someone discovered the North Pole. You can't say, "All rock and roll flowed from this one song." Culture doesn't work that way.

Look at what I said above-- I am in no way saying blacks weren't critical to the development of rock and roll. That would be ridiculous. What I am saying is that whites contributed to. Without white influence, you still just have R&B, which is different from R&R. Without black influence you still just have C&W, which is different from R&R.

BTW the sites you linked to are shit. Read some real rock crit-- like from Dave Marsh or Robert Christgau or Lester Bangs. All those fags LOVE black music but they aren't dumb enough to claim that blacks "invented" rock and roll.

Perhaps you are correct and I am being too aggressive.

I was mainly just replying to the boneheads up above arguing that blacks' influence on R&R is just lib fantasy. I'm not interested in a competition over who is more talented musically-blacks or whites.

The sad thing is that blacks abandoned rock and roll (or weren't getting airplay on AOR so went in another direction). No reason you couldn't have more people like Chuck Berry or Jimi Hendrix. Of course it doesn't matter now because whites have abandoned rock and roll too.

I mean, blacks couldn't even be featured on the own album covers back then. This is an old school Otis Redding cover:

While I agree that blacks got short shrift from record companies and radio, that sort of stuff was common.
