Anecdotally, what was your experience irl? For console gens with published figures, mine tends to align with that of the public record (PS1 @ 30m in the U.S. versus N64 @ 18m units. Basically most people with N64s ended up getting PS1s once the gen was Lost, but not necessarily vice-versa).
Ime, irl, SNES was 100% associated with Losers and Genesis with Scumbags. My family had both bc we were Hybrids. The Scumbag Clique did pretty well in the 90s prior to the passage of NAFTA by the Republicans in Congress so I reckon they could all afford a Genesis. OTOH, SNES *seemed* more popular, both contemporaneously and atm. Discuss.

I’m an outlier but literally everyone I knew as a kid had genesis while 1-2 people had SNES. may have been a bay area effect due to sega’s SF headquarters.
my understanding is that SNES slaughtered genesis in rural areas where sega had poor distribution and nintendo had preexisting relationships with retailers. also that urban black and hispanic communities vastly preferred genesis over SNES.

SNES was still riding the brand halo of NES, which was a huge step up from Atari and the first mass produced awesome console.
Sega was like a knockoff Nintendo trying to run on hype, akin to Reebok with its pumps trying to compete with Nike's Jordans. Sonic was the Reebok pump Mario.

I have been playing a lot of systems since I was one in 1993. First systems were an NES and Genesis. Never played SNES until 2000, and never owned one until late 2005. I have been helping Sega-16 with reviews for over a year. It's time to see what I can cover for the SNES via SNES hub.

I got a Sega Genesis sometime in 1995. Played it for about 1 year. Skipped PS1. Got a PS2 in about 2006. Got a PS3 in 2010. Got a PS4 in 2014.
On Genesis I played Columns, Sonic & Knuckles, Lion King, Mortal Combat, Mortal Combat II, and Ecco the Dolphin.
On PS2, I had games like NCAA Football 2003, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.
On PS3, I got into Skyrim.
On PS4, I played Last of Us, and tried to get into Witcher III, but I just ended up getting Skyrim for PS4 and went with that. My kids now use the PS4 to play Minecraft.

The catalogs were arguably quite different imo. Ports were incredibly different. In practice, Genesis had Sonic, 180 sports games, Aladdin, and throwaway side scrollers, some of which were Scummy. There were some hidden gems like Castlevania or Phantasy Star but these were easy to overlook amidst the Scum zeitgeist. You also had random Scummy games like the one where dinosaurs fight to the death, or the Jurassic Park one where you play as a dinosaur. The whole zeitgeist was Scummy. Sega CD and 32X augmented the library's Losery and Scummy qualities, respectively.
In retrospect, DKC was no more impressive than Mortal Kombat. DKC digitized 3D renderings. Mortal Kombat digitized guys in costumes. Earthworm Jim, for that matter, digitized 2D graphics and looks pretty good still imo. With that said, DKC2 is a triumph.
Also, the enduring franchises are a tough one. Nobody cares about Mega Man X, or Actraiser, or JRPGs imo. SNES persists in being popular simply because the fans are Losers instead of Scumbags. But literally NO ONE ALIVE cares about Vectorman. Anyone that did is dead by now, anyway.
