The bigger problem is that everything is on borrowed time. How are they going to get heating in the winter? There have been fuel shortages for months for cars. There are videos coming out all the time of people crossing into Russian held territory. The economy is totally shot. There's bombing across the country every single night. There are vids of people fighting soldiers trying to draft them. Basically everyone that wanted to actually fight for Ukraine is already in the army, so all that's left is the people who had zero interest in doing that.
Let's say that somehow they make it through the winter. Then what? Keep living on handouts until the following winter when everything will again get even worse? They can't live off of Western charity forever. |

It's possible that Kherson is a feint. Russians North of the river are stuck there. They can't advance b/c the two bridges in their rear can be bombed by Ukraine whenever (they proved this when they bombed the Nova Kakhovka dam bridge exactly when Russians were moving troops across). Melitopol is also far more lightly defended now after Russia moved several thousand troops West towards Kherson to defend there. If Ukies can swing south from Zaporizhzhia to take Melitopol Kherson is fucked anyway. |

The Ukrainians are obviously taking heavy casualties here.
On its own, this would be a horrible way to fight the war in the long run for Russians because they lose a lot of land in the process. But since their mobilized troops should finish training by the winter, it makes sense for them to fight like this to grind Ukraine down until they arrive (it's not that winter weather is important for Russia, it's more that that's when more troops arrive) |
