Let me just say that spending was down substantially this last month to just over $11,000. But it needs a lot of work. Life is so expensive these days. Anyways, here are the numbers, please let me know if you have any ideas.

Childcare $2,450.00

Grocery $1,631.04

Travel $1,362.11 (had a trip to Los Angeles – flight, accommodations, rent car, Ralphs runs, etc.)

Mortgage $1,357.24

Utilities $1,014.27

Medical $876.44

Restaurant $689.51

Gasoline $447.88

General Merchandise $427.39 (amazon and wal-mart – just stuff we need I guess, wife buys from these retailers)

Telephone $240.77 (home internet + mobile bill)

Personal Care $153.38 (gym membership + some stuff my wife bought)

Clothing $208.97 (Back to school stuff for kids—I have 4)

CC Dues $95.00 (Chase Sapphire Preferred)

Electronics $76.51 (Apple pay that my wife uses)

Fees $29.00 (AmEx said they would credit this back)

Education $16.24 (some charge from my wife)

Entertainment $16.18 (Audible subscription for my wife)

Automotive $9.76 (this was disposal and tax on a “free” oil change on our mini van)

TOTAL $11,101

Please help. Also, it’s worth nothing that these numbers don’t include any payments for insurance or taxes. Obviously ~$50,000 more gets spent on that stuff each year.

Yeah that seems like low hanging fruit, but you have to remember I have a family. $680 represents going out to dinner once + getting one takeout meal per week for everyone on a Friday/Saturday + maybe 3 lunches that were bought out plus my wife getting a coffee maybe 2x a week.

So while we go out to eat, that is by no means the majority of our food spend.

1. Stop spending so much on chidcare, jfc.

2. Stop spending so much on groceries, jfc. My gf and I spend 300/mo at costco. Unless you have like 8 kids and are shopping at whole foods every other day, how are you spending 1.65k?

3. Why is your utilities bill so high?

5. Get a job that doesn't require you to spend 500 bucks per month on gas.

1. Not really sure what you want me to do here. My wife makes more than the childcare costs and we have other benefits tied to her employment.

2. No clue on how to reduce grocery spending. I agree with you that it is absurd but you go to the grocery and they charge you.

3. Electric has been up over $450/mo and water is like $100/mo, but maybe this was 2 months of water, I don’t know. Gas bill is about $85. A/c repair is also in this and that’s a couple hundred (only 10 more payments though!)

4. ???

5. ???

I think I already have one. But I never set it up. It’s a wireless Honeywell thermostat. I really don’t like messing with it though because there are multiple zones and if anyone touches them things get fucked up and then there is screaming. Screaming takes a lot out of me man. A lot.

esp if him and his wife work and the kids are in daycare/school all day. even if you're paranoid about libs and don't want smart home shit, you can just get a regular thermostat with a timer setting.

My wife, two kids, and I all had appointments and various medical charges last 30 days. Agree that that’s probably an outlier to some degree, but it’s always something man. There’s always at least $1000 of variance for something that comes up. Medical, car, school, trip, home repair/maintenance. It never ends.

I do cook. I’m not driving all the way to Costco unless I can be sure it’ll save me money. Most people that rave about Costco focus on the meat department (I got like 3 meat things last 30 days—have it once every 10 days-2 weeks) and their shirts (which I am not buying). Do not see any reason to participate in the Costco scam, especially because they don’t open until 9am or something and are super inconvenient.

It's not meats, it is just generally buying bulk items. I have three kids and I am puzzled at how you can spend so much on groceries if you cook. Would need a breakdown.

It’s really not. Groceries are subject to inflation and have gone up like 20% in the last year.

Mortgage has stayed the same.

Honestly couldn’t afford much more house at this cost of living creep. Inflation is absolutely out of control and cost of living in the United Stated is out of control. Lower middle class starts at like $200k HHI and upper middle class is like $800k-$1.3m per year. You are taking on water if you make less than $20k/month gross.
