His name was Rigo. Rigo Mordonea. A hard bodied Mexican, early 20s, sun worn skin already at the age and a fresh smile. He’d come up from Baja in the spring and ingratiated himself with the other hands. I remember how he’d flash his pearlies at me in the mornings as we brushed the horses before the day’s work, surface kindness masking something more dangerous, primal beneath. He called me over to a craig set in the limestone, shouting something half lost on the wind about his horse’s shoe. When I got there, he was naked from the waist up and slick with sweat. I can still recall, as it was happening, the sounds of the cows nearby, their low calls as they mindlessly consumed the fading grass.
