The way my house is set up the cable company could only install the modem/router in one particular area. Unfortunately that area (in our living room) isn't ideal for transmitting signal to our cottage, where I'm building an office. Cable company is useless in troubleshooting and suggests the only option to guarantee Internet coverage in our guest house is to buy another monthly Internet subscription and have a modem/router set up there. Thoughts on this? We tried extenders and they're not good.

Can I just run a really long ethernet cable from the modem in the main house to the guest house (directly to an extender there?)

You can run an Ethernet cable from your main house to your cottage (assuming they are close enough) and set up another old router as an access point.

I don’t feel like explaining it because it’s technical and I’m not in the mood but this article I skimmed through explains the gist of it I think https://networkshardware.com/repeater-vs-mesh/

When I moved into my house that had a setup the same as yours covid happened and I worked in the guesthouse. The Wi-Fi extender I had worked fine for about the first year but then cable company had outage for a day and after that extender was choppy as fuck. Couldn’t even hold court during a conference call. I bought a mesh (short) network and it’s worked great since then. Just place a node at the closest part of the house to the guesthouse.

Are you one of those dumb goys that gets his modem and wifi router from the fucking cable company?

Buy your own modem and router. Place router in ideal place.

Run Ethernet cable from modem to router.

They probably frame it as a monthly "discount" if you use your own router. This way you don't even realizing you they're charging you $10 / month for the router.

You can always use your own modem and router.

This may vary by state law though.

an $18/mo router rental fee is actually on my bill at the moment, but there is a corresponding $18/mo discount, so i don't pay anything for it.

If you dont want to run network cable all the way, Get an outdoor wifi access point and put it on the outside of your house pointed at the bldg

I have one sending wifi to our garden like a half mile away and it works good

Get some conduit and seal the joints and run some waterproof cable through it and bury it in a trench from your house to the cabin. Something like this

if you cant run cable due to distance, look at something point to point if you have pretty good line of sight. something like ubiquiti air max.

Brother I think that's direct burial ethernet. But he'd also need a crimping tool to attach the connectors.
