I think it's even worse these days with the increased popularity of turbo engines. Turbos tend to put up pretty solid numbers on the EPA cycle when you compare them with NA engines of similar output, but that efficiency goes way down when you push them hard
I see all kinds of people zooming around in turbo four cylinders that are getting worse fuel economy than the V6 they used to drive

My understanding of things is that turbo engines have relatively mediocre fuel economy under heavy acceleration but they make up for it with high fuel economy at idle or cruising speeds. A dynamic like that would work out well for average or conservative drivers, but would be irrelevant/bad for lead-footed drivers.
Even if that conception of things is flawed, there are still other reasons why the fuel economy benefits of turbos are mostly illusory.
One thing is that turbo engines have flatter power delivery, which leads people into accelerating harder than they would have with an NA engine.
Another thing is that the turbocharged engine is often just positioned as an optional engine that is less fuel efficient (but more powerful) than the base model. This dynamic is slowly changing - the base model of a lot of cars now is a turbo. But it wasn't that long ago where if you bought a turbo engine, it was a flat out guarantee that there was another engine within the same make & model with better fuel economy.

“mediocre fuel economy under heavy acceleration but they make up for it with high fuel economy at idle or cruising speeds”
You just described every vehicle ever but this is especially true of N.A V6s and V8s. Irl gas mileage of a corvette is like 12 city/30 highway. Turbos has a tighter spread if anything. Also look at the F-150 mileage versus every other truck
Turbos are basically free power/mpg, you pay for it with premium fuel and higher compression ie you’d be a fool to expect them to be problem free at high mileage
A typical N.A. Honda engine will have better mpg and still have good power if you need it, and will also last forever. Discuss.

Proles will kill us all imo
Also they’ll rarely accelerate quickly from a stop unless they’re exhibiting Speed intentionally, but they come barreling to a stop usually. They charge headlong into red lights. Discuss.
