I haven't played guitar since around 2001. So maybe 22 years or so. When I packed up for my home renovation I found my old guitar a few weeks ago.

I haven't touched a guitar in over 20 years. Rate my skills. It's crazy how good I am at everything. I can't wait until I retire to just keep picking up hobbies and excelling in them. That's what life is all about.

My primary home is worth like 2 million and the house my MIL rents is worth like 900K. And I don't charge her anything over my costs. So really only 15 million in investible assets. That's very little at that point. Need to make up for the 3 million in non-incoming producing assets.

you realize you already have like 4 times more money than i, a solidly middle class attorney, will earn in my entire life? if you put all your money into a 30 year treasury right now you'd make $550k a year which is a total fantasy for 99.9% of people. you could play video games with your kids all day, send them to the best schools, take baller vacations, and still afford guitar lessons from fucking steve vai.

if u were as dedicated as u are to ur law practice, a few years

when a young associate writes a memorandum/brief, u can tell immediately whether he/she has that lawyerly skill that goes beyond logical reasoning and writing ability-- so too, a guitar player either has that musicality or he don't

Honestly, I only played for a couple years. I mostly just jammed blues/jazz with my friends and I played in a band for a bit less than a year. I think just playing and having fun with it helps get you better fast. Not sure I did anything specifically.

I can't help feeling deep envy watching this video.

You just know that CSLG grew up a rich kid who probably just mentioned "guitar seems cool" and his parents bought him a nice guitar and got him professional lessons where he learned those pentatonic blues riffs.

I have no anger or ill feelings toward CSLG but I had to borrow friends instruments, save up and buy my own guitar and teach myself everything I know.

The post was exclusively about me and my own issues, brother. I'm not a hater of yours at all. You're massively successful and I wasn't suggesting that this is attributable to your parents' finances.

The thread triggered me. I had flashbacks of my parents laughing at the 13 year old version of myself and telling me to fuck off when I said I wanted to learn guitar. Memories of scraping up enough to buy a Squier strat and playing bands that my parents called bullshit.

I'm glad that your parents were supportive but also envious of the guy wearing an mxpx shirt playing a very nice electric guitar he got as a teenager and playing blues licks he was very clearly taught during lessons his parents paid for.

If you had a Les Paul DC when you graduated HS you must have been rich or VERY serious about guitar. I went to a very wealthy east coast school and come from money and remember being flabbergasted as a teenager that my friend’s parents bought him a PRS falling bird. (For rich parents at that time, it was NBD to buy your kids a 3 series or Saab or landcruiser, but somehow NO ONE would buy their kids nice guitars or amps.) Your playing is great if it’s true you haven’t played for 20 years. But I find it hard to believe that, and I now find myself questioning what kind of financial background you come from and how much of your success is truly self-made versus being a rich kid who was a member of the “right” shyster synogague.

TBF I own the EXACT same guitar as in the OP, got it last year. Amber top Les Paul DC standard. Paid $2100 used.

DCs are fairly expensive now, over $2k used - my $2100 was actually on the lower end of the price scale on reverb.com etc these days. But I have monitored these for many years. I want to say when they (this model) came out new, late 90s to mid to late 2010s, they were a bit less than a normal Les Paul, maybe $1200ish? Maybe a little more? For a long time they were $1200-1500 on the used market, only in the last few years did they shoot up in price so much.

That said, a $1200 guitar in high school is expensive. I knew one kid with a Les Paul Custom in MIDDLE SCHOOL and he wasn't even that rich, another with a les paul standard (but he was rich), everyone else had squires and ibanezes.

TCR. I went to a top boarding school and knew everyone on campus who played electric guitar. Until my friend got his PRS senior year, the nicest guitar was an 80s LP standard that a kid’s dad had given him. Everyone else had shit pure shit. I had an Ibanez S-model and the best player in school had some Jackson or ESP shredmachine with a Floyd Rose that cost like $600. One kid had a Mesa Boogie heartbreaker, but everyone else had solid state bullshit amps.

the Mesa Boogie kid is a big-rich tell

Everyone I know pretty much had solid state amps, myself included. One guy had a marshall combo that I think was tubes. One guy was a pro, like he was a young phenom and played in local metal bands at local clubs and even he had some solid state stack.

I bought this Art SGX T2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXzbminAPkw that was BIG TIME to me back in high school - basically a 90s multi effects processor that could do pretty much everything that I needed, never even occured to me that I would want a tube amp once I got this thing

My parents divorced when I was 11. My mom got about 10K/month in child support/Alimony. So we weren't poor but not super rich. We lived in a house we bought for 600K in 1998 (in the same neighborhood I live in now. It is probably worth like 2.2 million now).

My mom was terrible with money and basically lived support check to support check. She was super generous with everyone and definitely spoiled me and my brother, but not in a crazy way. Most of the stuff we bought were video games, skateboards, bb guns, etc. So nothing really expensive. I bought that guitar in like 1997, and I think it was like $800 at the time (although I could be wrong). I took lessons for about 2 years (from about 13-15) and then I was in a band for a bit.

I stopped touching my guitar for the most part around 18 and it was packed away at my mom's house until she died in February last year. Didn't touch a guitar for at least 20 years besides the occasional time I would run into someone playing and I'd pick it up for like 5 minutes.

As a side story, I bought a black face proreverb for $300 at a garage sale back in 1997. Was an insane deal because the lady's husband had passed away and she had no idea what it was. I sold it in college though since I never used it.

As far as my financial success, I'm 100% self made, brother. I had no financial help starting my firm or with college/law school and 100% of the cases I had when I went solo were from people who weren't family members. I paid for all my law school/college with money I made investing my Everquest winnings.

That CS/A is a crooked number. A quick inflation search returns that is worth almost $18,000 a month, or $216,000 a year. Haha wow holy shit.

Pay off 600k house worth 2.2 mil now. She could have gotten deep into the real estate game herself. Her house appreciated more than double the rate of inflation. That 10k a month was more than a handout, it was a gift.

Whenever I have an unsophisticated client who spent the entire marriage not working, budgeting or managing finances, I spend a lot of time explaining exactly how much money they will have and what a reasonable monthly budget would be. I try to set them up with a trustworthy accountant and financial planner too.

I wouldn't be shocked if your mom received substantial assets on top of support and blew threw that too.

When they divorced she got about 800K in assets. She put 200K into the house we bought to have a lower mortgage payment (mostly because my dad told her to do that). She spent the rest on buying a 7 series BMW, helping friends with loans (they never paid back), and bought a bunch of jewelry. She had a few hundred K left and that slowly bled out after 2-3 years. She inherited almost a million from her rich uncle in 2004, and that lasted for about 18 months. The biggest issue is that her sister and brother were very successful and she tried to spend to keep up with them. Funny enough my aunt's husband blew through all their money and she ended up broke and living at my mom's house for a while. She then met a doctor and married him. She now lives in Oxnard in a nice house and has a 180 husband who flies his private plane every weekend.

They all would. Their whole smug attitude towards life and the narcissism is based around the fact that you could pull a high paying career out of your ass at any time no matter how bad things had gotten, if you tried at life even a little bit you were automatically successful and if you tried really hard you were insanely successful. In that's environment who wouldn't end up cocky and wasteful.

This thread is selfpwn. You revealed that your mother made 800k in divorce assets, got paid 18,000 dollars in 2023 money a month, you grew up in a 1.1 million dollar home again in 2023 dollars, and your mother also inherited a million dollars again in 2004.

This cuts pretty hard at your rags to riches, I paid for law school with my EverQuest money story. I'd say this was a pretty brutal selfpwn and no amount of, "but my mom was an irresponsible birdbrain" can take away from the fact you grew up with a shitload of money.

None of this is new info, brother. Mom was broke by the time I graduated college. I also paid for everything on my own after I moved out at 17. 180 troll job though. Email me and lets go grab a beer.
