The ones that do tend to be authoritarian/totalitarian places like North Korea, China, and the former Soviet states. So from a Western perspective, all military parades are gauche.
To the extent that Russia is concerned with image at all, how the state is perceived by military age males is paramount. Things might be different if they were engaged in a defensive/existential war, but they're fighting a war of conquest, so projecting an image of strength is critical if they hope to keep morale high and meet their recruitment goals.
Supposedly Trump wanted tanks and missiles and fighter jets at his inaugural parade but was talked out of it. Tbf I think that would have been awesome. |

By the way, I lived on Tverskaya which is right down the block from Red Square and saw the rehearsals in front of my apartment (and let me tell you, nothing better than seeing a bunch of tanks headed to red square at 1am with no warning - freaked the ever living shit out of me the first time I saw it).
Those tanks aren't permanently in Moscow, they have to get trucked in, fueled, taken off the trucks. They damage the roads, by the way, so they do repairs after the parade is done. It is incredibly costly. It requires a ton of manpower to operate. In a time of actual war it is a stupid luxury. |
