he was like "you guys know that you are listening to the equivalent of a boy band. Jim Morrison was on the cover of every teeny bopper girls magazines and was a complete piece of shit. they had a few ok songs"

I think there's a good case to be made for them.

Seemed like they got big almost by accident, and didn't seem to want fame as much as, say, U2 did.

They are actually my pick I think. They bridged a lot of classic genres together, 70s style country-rock, 80s new wave, 90s grunge but all combined into their own style.

One unfortunate thing was that some of their (to me) worst songs became their most famous but that happens with a lot of bands.

Must be a BAND?

Bands were a 1966-1996 phenomenon.

Chuck Berry

Elvis

Dylan

Springsteen

I don’t particularly like any of the above, except for BS, but they all tower above most bands listed itt. The first three redefined the entire rock genre in turn.

if The Lovin' Spoonful had had more consistent songwriting and ambition, they could have been an 'American Beatles.'

there is a mid-60s Beatles outtake where the Beatles tried and failed to play the chords to 'Daydream' and John Lennon admits that the Spoonful were, at least musically thought not creatively, better than the Beatles.

but like most American bands, they only have like 6 good songs, while British bands have like 100 good songs.

Product of UK art schools. Tens of thousands of smart, literate, creative, ambitious UMC white blokes who had time in their late teens / early 20s to fuck around and not have to work. Groups like the Zombies had their fun, recorded hits, and then retired to quiet lives as dentists and accountants.

Also on top of that, you could tour the whole UK easily and all the press was right there in London, it's just a more efficient setup for developing and churning out bands and quickly getting famous than the more decentralized US.

I don't know a lot about Zappa, but this is a nonsense claim re: the E Street Band. The core group has been together since the 70s, they play on the albums, and their specific styles are integral to the Springsteen sound + live show. Fans know the band members by name. It's very different from someone like Dylan who burns through supporting musicians and the fans only care about the frontman.

Ok but the act is Bruce Springsteen AND the E street Band.

It's all of Bruce's songs and he could still sell out giants stadium if he replaced everyone in the E street band tomorrow.

Yes, the members have been static but Clarence clemens died 12 years ago and they didn't skip a beat. Name the rest of the members. Steve Van Sandt? Oh cool a rhythm guitarist. Oh yeah and the drummer from Conan.

I think a strong case can be made for Metallica. Eg if the test is which American Rock band caused the most American kids to learn to play guitar they win easily. Van Halen doesn’t have nearly the longevity and really got left behind as a band that a specific set of Gen Xers really loved and no one else gave a shit about. Nirvana and GnR can make similar claims in terms of influence both more generally and in terms of musicians specifically.

EVH influenced people who thought they knew how to play guitar to learn to play like him or to give up. Literally everyone we went to high school with knew that Nothing Else Matters was just plucking four open strings on a standard E tuning. Some of us also got obsessed and eventually learned the Hetfield solo in that song perfectly but never quite got good at the double hammer-ons in the solo in One.

Metallica is interesting but ultimately too niche IMO. They’re a “metal” band at the end of the day.

GnR’s run was too short in my opinion. Basically two good albums and that was it. Same thing with Nirvana. I really wish Cobain hadn’t killed himself.

Van Halen post Diamond Dave was objectively terrible.

disagree that a short run is disqualifying pretty much every band starts to suck really quickly.

nirvana lasted about the right length even though its too bad he was suicided to death. gnr's problem is they started sucking already despite a short career.

and of course van hagar wasnt good. i dont even consider it the same band

My point on VH is that no one under 45 listens to them because they sound dated as fukkk. You’re right that at the time and for people of that early/mid 80s moment they were massive. Part of it is also an MTV effect, and Sammy Hagar being too ugly and shitty, but VH died in 1985 and no one who was under the age of 12 at the time gave a shit. Influence is the wrong term, though, you’re right, and VH had a ton of influence and definitely EVH blew everyone away when they first blew up. But as far as lasting relevance they’re remarkable in how little of it they retain despite being so influential and huge in their heyday. Ie tons of millennials listened to GnR and Metallica and they still reliably drew younger Gen Xers such that they we’re still headlining festivals alongside Travis Scott and Tame Impala in the late 2010s. VH was nowhere near that level of fame and continued relevance for 25+ years prior to that.

The correct answer is Nirvana. Most influential individual American band, did the most to blend art and pop. Most unique. They just weren't as prolific as some of the others but they had the biggest impact.

Second place Beach Boys.

Name a band that was influenced by them. Within the Seattle scene they were SUPER LATE to the game. They might have been the very last band out of Seattle. Then they died and everyone stopped playing like those Seattle bands. People listen to them a lot because there hasn't been any good music made since then. They weren't the greatest rock band of all time, they are just the most recent one that was yuge. There haven't been any "rock stars" since then.

Rock is expensive to promote. Digital downloads gave record companies no reason to invest and promote in new rock artists. Instead, hire people off the street who look good in sunglasses to "sing" into a computer that shapes their voice into a song. It's sad. Hardly anyone can play drums can maek it because the computer plays drums now. Country pays better than rock now, and a good guitarist is better off in Nashville than LA.

Cr. Compare to the UK and it’s astonishing. The only American bands I really love are hardcore/punk, then indie stuff like the pixies. We don’t have many great mainstream bands.

Look at England - Stones, Beatles, kinks, Bowie, Pink Floyd, the who, zeppelin, the smiths, oasis, new order, the cure etc.

But their underground music ain’t got shit on America

Brits have loads of the best punk bands too and huge, robust underground music scene.

Sex pistols, crass, the clash, the business, the damned, the jam.

More recent is the skints who have managed to blend elements of reggae, ska, punk and electronic music.

the brits do have lots of good punk bands, but the US still decisively beats the UK's ass when it comes to underground music (and remember that punk started in the US): stooges, the ramones, dead boys, talking heads, television, blondie, etc. and then you have the early to mid 80s hardcore scene that the brits can't even begin to touch - bad brains, black flag, dead kennedys, minor threat, misfits, etc etc etc. i'll leave out hardcore post-1986 because that's a pretty narrow niche.

and indie rock. brits have some good indie rock, but where are their sonic youth, dinosaur jr, pavement and pixies, i ask u? to be clear, they have some really great underground bands - wedding present, the fall, swervedriver, lush - but i don't think their "indie rock" scene is anywhere near as good as the US.

Mentioned upthread, but R.E.M. had a long history and was influential in the alternative music scene back in the day. Up there with U2 as the 2 biggest bands in the genre.

Velvet Underground was hugely influential but was not really popular enough.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was a standard bearer for Southern rock, which was big through the 1980s before petering out.

Metallica has a huge fan base and is a top heavy metal band (I guess-- not a metal fan).

Grateful Dead-- huge following, invented the jam band

More recent acts? I don't know. Nirvana was better than Pearl Jam but Pearl Jam had a longer career and was more popular.

Disagree. To be clear, I would not nominate them as the greatest American rock band. I would definitely put them below (for example) Aerosmith and Nirvana. But they should at least be in the conversation. I would put them as borderline top 5. Part of the problem with Pearl Jam is that they made absolutely zero effort to write hits or make their music commercially marketable. So plenty of people have never heard anything other than their first three albums. (And to be fair, they did produce some weird shit over the years.) But they were the #1 selling rock band of the 90's and they are still producing quality music 30 years later.

Nirvana if you’re going by pure pop culture influence and nostalgia.

Nirvana and Cobain might be the most popular rock band today among Gen Z even though he’s been dead for 30 years. You see Nirvana shirts and memorabilia everywhere still. Cobain artifacts pull top dollar at auctions. Probably more than any other musician. One of his guitars recently sold for $4.5M

Phish is Grateful Dead but Grateful Dead did it first and probably better.

Ramones-- influential for punk, but almost a joke band. Compare their output with Clash, Pistols, New York Dolls-- doesn't hold up. You hear one album and you can call it a day. Samey

GnR-- had one great album that is overrated by the people who heard it during their formative years. Not influential at all on subsequent music as far as I can tell.

Talking Heads. Excellent band. Not much influence. Trumped by VU and REM regardless of whether you prefer them musically or not.

I can see punk enthusiasts being more into the Stooges but I think Ramones were way ahead of the pistols and the clash. Johnny Ramone was a great guitar player. Dee Dee was a great songwriter. Their music gets replayed more than any other bands on that list.

What made the Ramones seem like a joke is that they never had a hit record or even a hit single. They had to tour relentlessly to make money. They also weren't part of the punk fashion trend in the UK and got snubbed/overtaken by the Pistols early on. I still don't consider them punk, just rock and roll.

Yeah the punk timeline is fucked. The Ramones touched off a big movement in England, but they didn't tour England until after the Pistols and Clash had gotten yuge. So to casual observers it looked like the Ramones were late to the game.

Joey was a dumbfuck and a degenerate, and a yuge shitlib to boot. Johnny put the band together, came up with the look, and was clearly the alpha male in the group. But the fans were into Joey, and over time Joey let it get to his head and began to challenge Johnny. Then they lost Dee Dee and their songwriting tanked, like when the Beach Boys lost Brian.

Use Your Illusion had November Rain, Estranged, Knock Heavens Door, You could be Mine, Dont Cry, Coma, Civil War. That is a great lineup. THe album has filler to be sure, but there is a reason it was one of the top selling albums of a loaded year. The best of those albums are some of the best songs ever.

Guns was the GOAT band for a short period. That is far more impressive than bands that are merely good for twenty years.

So that's really 20 years now where the Foo Fighters have been the de facto rock band.

Green Day is a another good answer. But obviously the importance of rock music has dwindled but there's something to be said Foo Fighters continuing to win grammys and selling out stadiums and stuff long after the genre is dead.

both very fair points, they're huge, huge rock bands but they're bland as shit. i can't imagine anyone 20 years from now saying "foo fighters were a huge influence on us!" i really hope our kids aren't pulling foo fighters records out of our crates.

lmao pretty sure foo fighters and green day being forced as the "best" in rock is meant to demoralize. both have been terrible for 25 years now

I don't disagree, but just making the point.

It's sort of like if Eminem kept making his albums, but we never got Kanye, Drake, Lil Wayne, etc. So all the casual rap fans were just like, "I guess Eminem has another album coming out!" for 25 years

Sad how underrated ZZ Top is. You try doing what they did.

Trios are always cr too. You can't have any bad musicians in a trio. Look at some famous trios: Rush, Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Primus, all bands with super talented musicians on every instrument. I think Motorhead belongs on the list too because they functioned best as a trio.

The correct answer is the Grateful Dead, if you really mean it when you use the word "band." Huge impact on recording, concerts, idiom, politics. Beach Boys would be on there, but their expertise is Mike Love's vocals and Brian Wilson's writing, and not much else. Their recordings were done by other instrumentalists. They weren't huge live. Their impact was limited.

In the UK, it's the Beatles, though I find Led Zeppelin more interesting musically

the Dead are so quintessentially American, the house band for the Hell's Angels playing psychedelic country bluegrass rock and they toured the US extensively, probably more than any other band ever has or will

hundreds of shows thousands of hours of playing live in all kinds of venues across the country many of which no longer exist

their songs and lyrics are about the old west, road trips and the Bible

places like XO will dump on them because they were a "hippie band" but in their prime they were nothing like "libs" today and had more in common w 60s bikers than 2023 San Francisco

*if we count Springsteen as a band than you have to slot them in.

as for contenders:

Nirvana - only considered legends because a junky offed himself at peak time

Pearl Jam - too gay even for me (and I suck dicks)

Eagles - I'm with the Dude on this one
