My best experience in Jakarta was living in a big ass mansion in Pasar Minggu, having an entire section to myself, having all these staff who cooked and cleaned your clothes every day, having a driver and shit. It is customary for anyone with money to hire servants there. You're considered greedy if you don't do it, so literally every foreigner living there long term has servants. One dood was there on a fullbright or some shit like that. It was enough for him to rent a detached house near Blok M, but with clean air. You could walk 10 minutes and be in traffic, but where he was it was quiet and they didn't allow 2 stroke engines in the neighborhood. He had an old husband and wife who lived in a section of the house that was connected to the kitchen, and that area was off limits to us, including the kitchen. I mean if I wanted to go into the kitchen, I couldn't. I would be intruding into their home. The wife could cook anything. American, European, Indian, whatever. You could get scrambled eggs with bacon or whatever. In the morning you would tell her what you wanted for dinner, and either she or the husband would buy any ingredients they needed over by Blok M. There's nothing you can't get at Blok M, so there was no food you could ask for that they couldn't have ready by dinner time. It was really only good as shopping destination because of the range of international shit there. I bought some vintage toraja coffee from 1984 was was packaged for sale in Japan. I don't know about whores outside the Japanese section. I always preferred going there at night when it was less busy. They've changed transportation around in ways that have made it easier to get to other sections of the city. Like it used to take TWO HOURS to get from downtown to Mangga Dua. Then they opened up that "busway" (is that still there?) and all of a sudden you could get there in 15 minutes. So I would expect and HOPE that Blok M is kinda abandoned now.

It makes sense to keep it as the main transportation hub for that reason, since those busses are how you get to 90% of the metro area. Like if you have to go to Bandung or somewhere else in Java you're taking the bus. All the regional buses ran out of different terminals in the city, and all the terminals were reachable through Blok M when I was there.
The main thing was being able to north or south really fast. That was fucking impossible till they opened up those busways. You could only pay to sit on a nicer bus. You couldn't get there faster than the slowest bus. |

You get in the lane for the bus that goes to the other terminal you're trying to get to and wait till one with AC shows up. Last time I checked Blok M was connected to every terminal, but the terminals did not all have direct connections between them. So if you were a fucking retard like the average Indonesian, and you didn't know how to get around this big ass city, you could just go to Blok M and start from there. If you were from a remote town in Java, but flying in and out of Jakarta, you could always get to the bus terminal for your region from Blok M. Making it any more complicated that would cause all these villagers to get lost. I took the bus to Bali from Jakarta, and also took a bus to somewhere in Sumatra once though never doing that again. Short drives took forever. What they did was knock out one lane from each road and make usable only by certain buses. They had dreams of building an elevated train like Bangkok, but this was a reasonable compromise because it made so many areas accessible. It's still kinda random though because they weren't actually building any new roads.
It's hard to describe what Jakarta was like before they did all of that, but main thing to recognize was that you could only move quickly between merdeka plaza area and Blok M. You couldn't get between any other two quadrants of the city quickly. When I lived in Pasar Minggu, it was unthinkable to go to Mangga Dua except on weekends because it was a 4 hour round trip journey just to get to that mall. Instead, you had to become really familiar with what was happening in south Jakarta. Shopping, nightlife, whatever, you needed to find it in south Jakarta. It was cool because there were lots of rich little pockets in south Jakarta and plenty to do. OTOH if someone was staying at a hotel downtown, you would never suggest that they take a day trip to south Jakarta. That dood who was living in Blok M works for the feds now btw. |
