Three-train collision in India leaves at least 50 dead, hundreds injured

At least 50 people were killed and more than 350 injured in a massive train collision in eastern India on Friday, according to officials and local media reports. Many people remain trapped inside train cars and under the wreckage.

Around 7:20 p.m. local time, a passenger train derailed in the eastern Indian state of Odisha — which sent some cars careening onto the opposite track, where they were struck by a passenger train, according to local media reports, and a nearby freight train also became ensnared in the pileup.
“Distressed by the train accident in Odisha,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter. “In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon.”
India’s railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced shortly after the crash that victims would be compensated: Approximately $12,000 to those who had been killed, and roughly $2,400 and $600 to people who had suffered “grievous” and “minor” injuries, respectively.
Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde, the top administrator in Indian’s Balasore district, confirmed that the death toll had passed 50, the Associated Press reported. |

“There were loud shrieks and blood all over,” he told the newspaper, adding that he saw people trapped under coaches and people wailing for help.

Mr. Vaishnaw told the Indian news agency ANI that he had ordered an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
Indian news reports said that as news of the crash spread, along with reports of mounting casualties, desperate relatives went to Howrah Station in West Bengal, where one of the trains had been heading, eager to determine the status of their loved ones.

India’s trains transport more than 13 million people a day, according to Indian Railways, but the system has been buffeted by years of neglect. In 2014, there were more than 27,000 train-related deaths, according to the country’s National Crime Records Bureau. In 2012, a committee appointed to review the safety of the rail network cited “a grim picture of inadequate performance largely due to poor infrastructure and resources.”
It recommended a host of urgent measures, including upgrading track, repairing bridges, eliminating level crossings and replacing old coaches with safer ones that better protect passengers in case of an accident.
Passenger safety, or the lack of it, has come under scrutiny in India in recent years. In 2016, more than 140 passengers died in the derailment of passenger coaches near the city of Kanpur.

First, a goods train was directed to a different track called a loop line, where it had to wait for another train, the Coromandel Express, to pass on the main track. Normally, after the goods train is diverted to the loop line, the track should be switched back to allow any new train approaching the station to continue on the main track.
In this case, there was a system failure. The switch blades that are responsible for moving the track back did not function properly. As a result, when the Coromandel Express, which had received a green signal to proceed, approached the station at high speed, the points had not moved back from diverting the goods train to the loop line.
As a result, the Coromandel Express collided with the stationary goods train on the loop line, as the track was not properly aligned for it to continue on the main track. |
